Parking Brake Shoes

NOTE
Adjustments to the park brake shoe are not necessary after replacing the park brake lever or park brake cables. The park brake is adjusted automatically by cycling the park brake lever three times.

  1. DO not operate the park brake lever with the rear disc brake rotor(s) removed.
  2.  
  3. Apply and fully release the parking brake three times.
  4.  
  5. Verify that the parking brake pedal releases completely.
  6.  
  7. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear brake caliper brackets.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear brake rotors.
  14.  
  15. Set the Drum To Brake Shoe Clearance Gage J-21177-A inside of the park brake drum at the widest point.
  16.  
  17. Place the contacts on the tool to the widest point of the drum.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the set screw on the tool to ensure the proper measurement when removing the tool from the drum.
  20.  
  21. Position the tool over the park brake shoe at the widest point.
  22.  
  23. Turn the adjuster on the actuator until the park brake shoe just contacts the tool.
  24.  
  25. Repeat for the opposite side.
  26.  
  27. Install the rear brake rotors.
  28.  
  29. Install the rear caliper brackets.
  30.  
  31. Install the rear tire and wheel.
  32.  
  33. Lower the vehicle to curb height.
  34.  
  35. Set and release the park brake lever three times.
    NOTE
    If the rear wheels rotate during the following test, readjust the parking brake shoes.

  36.  
  37. Apply the parking brake. Inspect the rotation of the rear wheels: The wheels should not rotate forward nor drag or rotate backward.

  39. Release the parking brake. Verify that the wheels rotate freely.
  40.  
  41. Lower the vehicle.
  42.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel bearing and hub assembly.
  4.  
  5. Rotate the parking brake adjusting nut until all park brake shoe adjustment has been removed.
  6.  
  7. Remove the parking brake shoe retaining spring.
  8.  
  9. Remove the park brake shoe assembly by grasping the shoe and spreading slightly while pulling the shoe from the actuator assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the park brake shoe assembly by grasping the shoe and spreading slightly while pulling the shoe over the actuator assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the parking brake shoe retaining spring.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel bearing and hub assembly.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the parking brake shoe-to-drum clearance.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Pull down on the front park brake cable and remove the front park brake cable from the connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the park brake cable from the brake caliper lever.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear brake caliper.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear brake caliper bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the brake rotor.
  16.  
  17. Turn the adjustment screw (1) to the fully home position in the notched adjustment nut.
  18.  
  19. Remove the park brake shoe assembly by sliding the shoe (2) towards the retaining spring (3) until the shoe disengages from the spring.

To install:

  1. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean shop towel.
  2.  
  3. Align the slots in both the adjusting screw and tappet to be parallel with the backing plate face.
  4.  
  5. Position the park brake shoe (2) on the inboard side of the actuator (1).
  6.  
  7. Slide the parking brake shoe into position and seat into the retaining spring (3).
  8.  
  9. Inspect the shoe assembly position. The shoe must be central on the backing plate with both tips located in the slots.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the park brake shoe.
  12.  
  13. Install the brake rotor.
  14.  
  15. Install the rear brake caliper bracket.
  16.  
  17. Install the rear brake caliper.
  18.  
  19. Install the park brake cable to the park brake lever.
  20.
