Removal & Installation

NOTE
The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Center the front wheels, then turn the ignition key to the LOCK position.
  4.  
  5. Lock the steering column through the access hole in the lower steering column trim cover using Steering Column Lock Tool J 42640.

  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Front air deflector
     
    Intermediate shaft
     
    Outer tie rod ends
     
    Variable effort steering electrical connector, if equipped
     
    Stabilizer shaft
     
    Power steering pressure and return hoses
     
    Power steering pressure hose retaining bolt
     
    Steering gear mounting bolts
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the steering gear through the left wheel opening.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear to the vehicle. Tighten the mounting bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
     
    Power steering pressure hose retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
     
    Power steering pressure and return hoses. Use new seals and tighten the hoses to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer shaft
     
    Variable effort steering electrical connector, if equipped
     
    Outer tie rod ends. Tighten the nuts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
     
    Intermediate shaft. Tighten the pinch bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Front air deflector
     
    Front wheels
     

  2.  
  3. Remove the Steering Column Lock Tool J 42640.
  4.  
  5. Bleed the power steering hydraulic system.
  6.  
  7. Align the front wheels as necessary.
  8.  


WARNING
The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become uncentered which will cause damage to the coil assembly.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Install J 42640 into the steering column access hole in order to lock the steering column. This will maintain the correct steering orientation.

  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tires and wheels.
  8.  
  9. Remove the outer tie rods retaining nuts.
  10.  
  11. Using J 24319-B remove the outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering gear heat shield.
  18.  
  19. Remove the rear transmission mount upper mounting nuts.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the variable effort steering electrical connector, if equipped.
  22.  
  23. Install a drain pan under the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Remove the power steering pressure and return hose from the power steering gear.
  26.  
  27. Remove the steering gear mounting bolts.

  29. Install a jack under the rear portion of the frame.
  30.  
  31. Remove the rear mounting bolts from the frame.
    NOTE
    The frame must be properly supported before partially lowering. The frame should not be lowered any further than needed to gain access to the steering gear.

  33. Lower the rear portion of the frame.
  34.  
  35. Remove the rack and pinion from the drivers side of the vehicle.
  36.  
  37. Transfer necessary components.
  38.  

To install:

  1. Install the rack and pinion to the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Raise the rear portion of the frame.
  4.  
  5. Install the frame mounting bolts. Tighten the frame mounting bolts to 142 ft. lbs. (192 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the transmission mount mounting nuts.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the transmission mounting nuts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the rack and pinion mounting bolts.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the rack and pinion mounting bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the power steering pressure and return hose to the power steering gear.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the power steering pressure and return hoses to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Connect the variable effort steering electrical connector.
  22.  
  23. Install the power steering gear heat shield.
  24.  
  25. Install the outer tie rods to the steering knuckles.
  26.  
  27. Install the outer tie rods retaining nuts.
  28.  
  29. Tighten the outer tie rod retaining nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Tighten the outer tie rod retaining nut up to 1 / 6 additional turn, or 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm ) maximum.
  32.  
  33. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering gear.
  34.  
  35. Install the intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Tighten the intermediate shaft pinch bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Install the tires and wheels.
  38.  
  39. Lower the vehicle.
  40.  
  41. Remove J 42640 from the steering column access hole.
  42.  
  43. Bleed the power steering system.
  44.  
  45. Adjust front toe.
  46.
