CV-Joints



Overhaul
Inner Joint
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Wrap a towel around the halfshaft and place it in a vise.

  5. Cut the large boot retaining clamp and discard.
  6.  
  7. Using a hand grinder, cut through the halfshaft swage ring.
  8.  
  9. Slide the boot away from the CV joint and wipe away any grease from the CV joint assembly.
  10.  
  11. Spread the ears of the CV joint race retaining ring using Special Tool J-8059 or equivalent snap ring pliers.
    WARNING
    The CV joint shank must be parallel to the halfshaft prior to removal. Never allow the inner race or cage to rotate within the outer race when the CV joint is separated from the halfshaft.

  13. Remove the CV joint assembly from the halfshaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the transmission retaining ring from the CV joint assembly using Special Tool J-8059 or equivalent snap ring pliers.
  16.  
  17. Remove the inner boot and swage ring from the halfshaft and discard.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Inspect the inner CV joint for visible damage or wear. The assembly is not serviceable and must be replaced if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Install a new swage ring on the neck of a new inner boot.
  4.  
  5. Slide the boot onto the halfshaft and position the neck of the boot onto the boot groove.

  7. Position the inboard end of the halfshaft assembly in the Drive Axle Swage Ring Clamp J-41048. Insert the bolts and tighten by hand until snug.
  8.  
  9. Tighten each bolt 180 degrees at a time until both sides are bottomed. Loosen the bolts.
  10.  
  11. Install the new race retaining ring into the inner race.
  12.  
  13. With the CV joint inner race and cage still at the bottom of the outer race bore, pack half of the grease provided in the service kit into the CV joint assembly.
  14.  
  15. Fill the inner boot with the remaining grease.
  16.  
  17. Place the new clamp over the large end of the inner boot.
  18.  
  19. Install a new transmission retaining ring onto the CV joint assembly.
  20.  
  21. Push the CV joint assembly onto the halfshaft until the retaining ring seats itself in the appropriate groove on the halfshaft.
  22.  
  23. Crimp the large boot retaining clamp using Special Tool J-35910 with a breaker bar and torque wrench. Tighten to 130 ft. lbs. (176 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Retighten the clamp until the proper gap dimension of 5 / 64 inch. (1.9mm) is reach.
  26.  
  27. Fully stroke the CV joint several times to disperse the grease throughout the joint.
  28.  
  29. Install the halfshaft into the vehicle.
  30.  

Outer Joint
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the halfshaft from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the large boot retaining clamp.
  6.  
  7. Use a hand grinder or suitable equivalent to cut through and remove the swage ring.
  8.  
  9. Separate the halfshaft outboard seal from the CV joint outer race.
  10.  
  11. Slide the boot away from the joint.

  13. Spread the ears on the race retaining ring with Special Tool J-8059.
  14.  
  15. Remove the CV joint assembly from the halfshaft.
  16.  
  17. Using a brass drift and hammer, gently tap against the CV joint cage in order to tilt the cage.
  18.  
  19. Remove the first chrome alloy ball with the cage tilts.
  20.  
  21. Tilt the cage in the opposite direction to remove the opposing alloy ball.
  22.  
  23. Repeat this process to remove all 6 balls.
  24.  
  25. Pivot the CV joint cage and the inner race 90 degrees to the center line of the outer race and align the cage windows with the lands of the outer race.
  26.  
  27. Lift out the cage and the inner race.
  28.  
  29. Remove the inner race from the cage by rotating the inner race upward.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Clean and inspect all parts.
  2.  
  3. Install the new swage ring on the neck of the outer boot.
  4.  
  5. Slide the outer boot onto the halfshaft and position the neck of the boot in the seal groove on the halfshaft.

  7. Position the outboard end of the halfshaft assembly in the Drive Axle Swage Ring Clamp J-41048. Insert the bolts and tighten by hand until snug.

  9. Tighten each bolt 180 degrees at a time until both sides are bottomed. Loosen the bolts and separate the dies.
  10.  
  11. Check the swaged ring for any lip deformities. Re-swage the ring if necessary.
  12.  
  13. Put a light coat of grease from the service kit on the ball grooves of the inner and outer race.
  14.  
  15. Hold the inner race 90 degrees to the centerline of the cage and align the cage windows the lands of the inner race and install the inner race into the cage.
  16.  
  17. Hold the cage and inner race assembly at 90 degrees to the centerline of the outer race and align the cage windows with the lands of the outer race.
  18.  
  19. Install the cage and inner race assembly into the outer race.
  20.  
  21. Insert the first chrome ball and then tilt the cage in the opposite direction to insert the opposing ball.
  22.  
  23. Repeat this process until all 6 balls are in place.
  24.  
  25. Place approximately half of the grease from the service kit inside the outer boot.
  26.  
  27. Pack the CV joint with the remaining grease.
  28.  
  29. Push the CV joint onto the halfshaft until the retaining ring is seated in the groove on the halfshaft.
  30.  
  31. Slide the outer boot, with the boot retaining clamp, in place over the outside of the CV joint outer face and locate the seal lip in the groove on the CV joint outer race.
  32.  
  33. Crimp the boot clamp using Special J-35910 or equivalent clamp pliers to 130 ft. lbs. (174 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Check the gap dimension on the clamp ear and continue tightening until the gap dimension is 5 / 64 inch (1.9mm).

  37. Install the halfshaft in the vehicle.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Insert a drift or punch into the brake rotor and against the caliper to prevent the wheel hub from turning.
  6.  
  7. Remove and discard the hub spindle nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Brake rotor
     
    ABS sensor
     
    Parking brake cable bracket
     
    Upper ball joint nut
     

  10.  
  11. Separate the upper ball stud from the knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Lower shock mounting bolt
     
    Lower control arm-to-knuckle mounting bolt
     
    Trailing arm-to-knuckle mounting bolt
     
    Adjustment link-to-knuckle mounting bolt
     

  16.  
  17. Install Wheel Hub Removal Tool J-42129 to the wheel hub.

  19. Use the Wheel Hub Removal Tool to disengage the halfshaft from the wheel hub.
  20.  
  21. Remove the knuckle assembly from the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Using a suitable tool, carefully release the halfshaft from the rear differential enough to install Seal Protector J-44394 over the halfshaft into the differential output shaft seal.

  25. Remove the halfshaft from the vehicle and discard the halfshaft retaining ring.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Install a new halfshaft retaining ring.
  2.  
  3. If previously removed, carefully install Seal Protector J-44394 into the differential output shaft seal.
    NOTE
    Failure to install J-44394 as indicated may cause the splines of the wheel drive shaft to cut the differential output seal.

  4.  
  5. Install the halfshaft until the splines are past Seal Protector J-44394. Ensure the retaining ring is installed in the upright position.
  6.  
  7. Remove Seal Protector J-44394.
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Loosely install all fasteners before tightening.



    Knuckle assembly
     
    Adjustment link-to-knuckle mounting bolt. Tighten to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
     
    Trailing arm-to-knuckle mounting bolt. Tighten to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
     
    Lower shock mounting bolt. Tighten to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
     
    Lower control arm-to-knuckle mounting bolt. Tighten to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
     
    Upper ball joint mounting nut. Tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) plus 210 degrees.
     
    Parking brake cable bracket. Tighten to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
     

  10.  
  11. Remove the jack from the lower control arm.
  12.  
  13. Install or connect the following:

    ABS sensor
     
    Brake rotor
     

  14.  
  15. Install a drift or punch into the brake rotor and against the caliper to prevent the wheel hub from turning.
  16.  
  17. Install a new hub spindle nut and tighten to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the wheel.
  20.  
  21. Check the fluid level in the rear differential.
  22.
