Coil Springs

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake hose bracket from the mounting studs when removing the right coil spring.
  6.  
  7. Support the lower control arm using a suitable jack.
  8.  
  9. Remove the lower shock mounting bolt.
  10.  
  11. Lower the lower control arm and remove the jack.
  12.  
  13. Support the cradle with a suitable jack.
  14.  
  15. Remove the side cradle-to-body mounting bolts.
  16.  
  17. Lower the side of the cradle and remove the coil spring.

To install:

  1. Install the coil spring and raise the cradle into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the cradle-to-body mounting bolts. Tighten the front bolts to 195 ft. lbs. (265 Nm). Tighten the rear bolts to 141 ft. lbs. (191 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install a suitable jack under the lower control and raise the control arm until the shock absorber aligns with the knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Install the shock absorber lower mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the brake hose bracket, if removed. Tighten the nuts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel.
  12.  

(FE1) & (FE3) Suspensions
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and the wheel
  6.  
  7. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.
  8.  
  9. Remove the automatic level control link from the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the shock absorber lower retaining bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the adjustment link retaining nut and use a puller to remove adjustment link.

  15. Slowly lower the lower control arm until it bottoms on the support assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the coil spring.

To install:

  1. Install the coil spring ensuring the insulator is seated in the lower control arm.
  2.  
  3. Raise the lower control arm and install the shock absorber lower retaining bolts.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the shock absorber lower retaining bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the adjustment link to the control arm.
  8.  
  9. Install the adjustment link retaining nut.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the adjustment link nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm), then tighten an additional 180 degrees.
  12.  
  13. Connect the automatic level control link to the lower control arm.
  14.  
  15. Install the tire and wheel.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  

(FE7) Suspension
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tires and the wheels.
  6.  
  7. Support the control arm with a suitable jack.
  8.  
  9. Remove the electronic level control air tube from the shock.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 bolts securing the shock to the control arm.
  12.  
  13. Remove the hex nut from the adjustment link.
  14.  
  15. Use the J 24319-B to remove the adjustment link from the control arm.
  16.  
  17. Install the J 44255 coil spring compressor.
  18.

  1. Slowly lower the control arm until it bottoms on the support assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the coil spring.
  4.  

To install:

  1. Install the coil spring in the J 44255 coil spring compressor.
  2.  
  3. Install the spring ensuring the insulator is seated in the control arm.
  4.  
  5. Raise the lower control arm and install the 2 shock bolts in the control arm.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the shock bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the adjustment link to the control arm.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the adjustment link nut to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm), then tighten an additional 180 degrees.
  12.  
  13. Connect the electronic level control air tube to the shock.
  14.  
  15. Install the tires and the wheels.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Check the toe and adjust if necessary.
