Lower Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer shaft link lower retaining nut.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the stabilizer link from the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear wheel drive shaft nut.
  12.  
  13. Install Wheel Hub Remover J-42129 to the wheel bearing/hub.
  14.  
  15. Using the remover, disengage the wheel drive shaft from the rear wheel hub and bearing.
  16.  
  17. Support the lower control arm using a jack.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower shock mounting bolt.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower control arm to knuckle mounting bolt.
  22.  
  23. Remove the lower control arm to frame mounting bolt and nut.
  24.  
  25. Separate the lower control arm from the knuckle.
  26.  
  27. Lower the jack.
  28.  
  29. Remove the rear coil spring and the lower control arm.
  30.  

To install:

  1. Install the rear coil spring and the lower control arm to jack.
  2.  
  3. Raise the jack until lower control arm and rear coil spring is in position in the frame.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower control arm to frame mounting bolt and nut.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the nut to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the lower control arm to knuckle mounting bolt.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the bolt to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the lower shock mounting bolt.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the bolt to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install a new rear wheel drive shaft nut.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the nut to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Connect the stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm.
  22.  
  23. Install the stabilizer shaft link retaining nut.
  24.  
  25. Tighten the nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Lower the jack.
  28.  
  29. Install the tire and wheel.
  30.  
  31. Lower the vehicle.
  32.  
  33. Check the wheel alignment.
  34.  

(FE1) & (FE3) Suspensions
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear suspension support assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizer shaft link bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer shaft insulators and spacer.
  8.  
  9. Remove the hub and bearing, if necessary.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nuts and the bolts securing the control arm to the rear suspension support assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the lower control arm.

To install:


NOTE
The control arm nuts should be tightened with the vehicle unsupported and resting on the wheels at the normal trim height.

  1. Install the lower control arm to the rear suspension support assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the wheel bearing and hub, if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Install stabilizer shaft link bolt, spacer, insulator, and nut.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the stabilizer shaft link nut to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the rear suspension support assembly.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the control arm nuts and bolts with the vehicle at normal ride height.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the control arm nuts to 78 ft. lbs. (106 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  

(FE7) Suspension
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear suspension support assembly
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizer link bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hub and bearing, if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Remove the support bracket bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nuts and bolts securing the control arm to the rear suspension support assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the control arm.

To install:


NOTE
The control arm nuts should be tightened with the vehicle unsupported and resting on the wheels at the normal trim height.

  1. Install the control arm to the rear suspension support assembly.
  2.  
  3. Install the hub and bearing, if necessary.
  4.  
  5. Install a new stabilizer link bolt and nut.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the new stabilizer link bolt nut to 11ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the rear suspension support assembly.
  10.  
  11. Install the support bracket bolts.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle to obtain trim height.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the control arm nuts.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the control arm nuts to 110 ft. lbs. (149 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20.
