Inner Tie Rod End




WARNING
The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disable SIR system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Install the J 42640 steering column anti-rotation pin to the steering column.
  8.  
  9. Remove the tire and wheel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
  14.  
  15. Remove the outer tie rod.
  16.  
  17. Remove the power steering gear bolts.
  18.  
  19. Carefully reposition the power steering gear in order to access the power steering gear dust boot.
  20.  
  21. Remove the jam nut from the inner tie rod.
  22.  
  23. Remove the rack and pinion boot outer clamp.
  24.  
  25. Remove the rack and pinion boot inner clamp.
  26.  
  27. Remove the rack and pinion boot.
    NOTE
    The pipe wrench must be placed at the valve end of the steering gear and positioned up against the inner tie rod housing. Placing the pipe wrench in any other location will cause damage to the steering gear.

  29. Place a pipe wrench on the rack next to the inner tie rod housing.
  30.  
  31. Place a wrench on the flats of the inner tie rod housing.
  32.  
  33. Rotate the inner tie rod housing counterclockwise, while holding the rack stationary, until the inner tie rod separates from the rack.

To install:

  1. Attach the inner tie rod onto the rack.
  2.  
  3. Place a pipe wrench on the rack next to the inner tie rod housing.
  4.  
  5. Place a torque wrench and the J 34028 on the flats of the inner tie rod housing. Tighten the inner tie rod to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the rack and pinion boot.
  8.  
  9. Install a new rack and pinion boot inner clamp. 
  10.  
  11. Using the J 22610 crimp the rack and pinion boot clamp.
  12.  
  13. Install the rack and pinion boot outer clamp.
  14.  
  15. Install the jam nut to the inner tie rod.
  16.  
  17. Position the power steering gear
  18.  
  19. Install the power steering gear bolts. Tighten the bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the outer tie rod. Tighten the retaining nut to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Tighten the jam nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
  26.  
  27. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt. Tighten the bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the tire and wheel.
  30.  
  31. Enable SIR system.
  32.  
  33. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  34.  
  35. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column.
  36.  
  37. Adjust the front toe.

  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Install the J 42640 steering column anti-rotation pin to the steering column.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rack and pinion boot.
  12.  
  13. Place the gear in a vise.
  14.  
  15. Remove the shock dampener (4) from the inner tie rod assembly (6).
  16.  
  17. Slide the shock dampener (4) back on the rack (5).
  18.  
  19. Place a pipe wrench on the rack (5) next to the inner tie rod housing (6).
  20.  
  21. Place a wrench on the flats of the inner tie rod housing (6).
  22.  
  23. Rotate the inner tie rod housing (6) counterclockwise, while holding the rack stationary, until the inner tie rod separates from the rack (5).
    NOTE
    Do not change the steering gear preload adjustment before moving the inner tie rod from the steering gear. Changing the steering gear preload adjustment before moving the inner tie rod could result in damage to the pinion and the steering gear.

  25. Remove the shock dampener from the inner tie rod housing.

  27. Slide the shock dampener back on the rack.
  28.  
  29. Place a pipe wrench on the rack.
  30.  
  31. Place a wrench on the flats of the inner tie rod housing.
  32.  
  33. Rotate the inner tie rod housing counterclockwise, while holding the rack stationary, until the inner tie rod separates from the rack.
  34.  
  35. Remove the old LOCTITE® from the threads of the inner tie rod and the rack.
  36.  

To install:

  1. Slide the shock dampener forward onto the rack.
  2.  
  3. Apply LOCTITE® 262 or equivalent to the inner tie rod threads.
  4.  
  5. Attach the inner tie rod onto the rack.
  6.  
  7. Place a pipe wrench on the rack next to the inner tie rod housing.
  8.  
  9. Place a torque wrench and J 34028 on the flats of the inner tie rod housing. Tighten the inner tie rod to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    NOTE
    If female rack and male inner tie rod do not stake. If male rack and female inner tie rod you must stake.

  10.  
  11. Place the inner tie rod assembly in a vise.
  12.  
  13. Stake both sides of the female inner tie rod assembly housing to the male rack.
  14.  
  15. Slide the shock dampener over the inner tie rod housing  until the front lip of the shock dampener  bottoms against the inner tie rod housing.

  17. Install rack and pinion boot.
  18.  
  19. Install the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement.
  20.  
  21. Enable SIR system.
  22.  
  23. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  24.  
  25. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column.
  26.  
  27. Adjust the front toe.
