Removal & Installation

2.8L & 3.6L Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  6.  
  7. Remove the thermostat housing bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the thermostat housing with the heater pipes, hoses and bolts.
  10.  
  11. Carefully clean the sealing surfaces with a plastic gasket scraper.
  12.  
  13. Remove the thermostat.

To install:

  1. Assemble the heater pipes and hoses to the thermostat housing.
  2.  
  3. Install a new gasket to the thermostat housing.
  4.  
  5. Install the thermostat.
  6.  
  7. Install the thermostat housing bolts to the thermostat housing. Partially install the thermostat housing bolts in order to retain the gasket.
  8.  
  9. Install the thermostat housing with the heater pipes, heater hoses, gasket and bolts.
  10.  
  11. Install the thermostat housing bolts and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core.
  14.  
  15. Fill the cooling system.
  16.  

4.6L Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Reposition the radiator outlet hose clamp at the thermostat housing.
  8.  
  9. Remove the radiator outlet hose from the thermostat housing.
  10.  
  11. Remove the thermostat housing bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the thermostat housing, thermostat, and gasket from the water pump housing.

To install:

  1. Install a NEW thermostat housing gasket into the water pump housing.
  2.  
  3. Install the thermostat into the water pump housing.
  4.  
  5. Install the thermostat housing.
  6.  
  7. Install the thermostat housing bolts. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the radiator outlet hose to the thermostat housing.
  10.  
  11. Position the radiator outlet hose clamp at the thermostat housing.
  12.  
  13. Fill the cooling system.
  14.  
  15. Install the air cleaner.
  16.  

5.7L & 6.0L Engines




NOTE
The water pump inlet (thermostat housing) and thermostat MUST be replaced as an assembly. The thermostat is not serviceable separately.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cooling fan assembly.
  6.  
  7. Reposition the outlet hose clamp at the water pump inlet.
  8.  
  9. Remove the outlet hose from the water pump inlet.
  10.  
  11. Remove the thermostat housing bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the thermostat housing.

To install:

  1. Install a new thermostat housing.
  2.  
  3. Ensure that the new thermostat housing has an O-ring seal and is in the groove correctly.
  4.  
  5. Install the thermostat housing bolts and tighten to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the outlet hose to the thermostat housing.
  8.  
  9. Position the outlet hose clamp at the thermostat housing.
  10.  
  11. Install the cooling fan assembly.
  12.  
  13. Fill the cooling system.
  14.
