Inspection

  1. Inspect the camshaft bearing journals for damage. If journals are damaged, check the cylinder head for damage. Also check the cylinder head oil holes for clogging.
  2.
  3. Check the cam lobe and bearing surfaces for abnormal wear and damage. Replace camshaft if defective.
  4.
  5. Measure the camshaft end play as follows:
    1. Using a suitable tool, move camshaft as far rearward as it will go.
    2.
    3. Zero out the dial indicator.
    4.
    5. Move the camshaft as far forward as it will go.
    6.
    7. Record the reading on the dial indicator.
    8.
    9. If end play is exceeds the specification, check cylinder head and camshaft for wear; replace as necessary

  39. Lift the timing chain off of the sprocket.
  40.
  41. Remove the exhaust camshaft.
  42.
  43. Secure the timing chain with wire so it does not fall into the timing chain cover.
  44.
  45. Remove the valve lifters.
    NOTE
Keep all of the valvetrain components in order for reassembly.

  46.

To install:

  1. Apply a light coat of clean engine oil to the valve lifters.
  2.
  3. Install the lifters into their original positions in the cylinder head.
  4.
  5. The camshaft cap is numbered 1, 2, or 3. This corresponds to the select fit bearing to use.
  6.
  7. Install the corresponding select fit bearing.
  8.
  9. Apply a light coat of clean engine oil to all of the camshaft journals.
  10.
  11. Install the camshaft phasers on the camshafts, if removed.
    1. Install camshaft phaser making sure that the dowel is in the correct hole.
    2.
    3. Install camshaft phaser bolt and hand tighten.
