Timing Chain Cover & Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove engine cover by pulling upward.
  2.  
  3. Perform fuel pressure bleed procedure.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect negative cable at battery.
  6.  
  7. Remove coolant recovery bottle.
  8.  
  9. Remove windshield washer bottle.
  10.  
  11. Remove power steering reservoir and set aside.
  12.  
  13. Remove make up air hose.
  14.  
  15. Remove PCV hose.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect ignition coil electrical connectors.
  18.  
  19. Remove cylinder head cover.
  20.  
  21. Raise vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Remove right lower splash shield.
  24.  
  25. Set engine to TDC (1).

  27. Remove accessory drive belt.
  28.  
  29. Remove lower A/C compressor retaining bolts.
  30.  
  31. Remove A/C compressor lower bracket.
  32.  
  33. Remove accessory drive belt lower idler pulley.
  34.  
  35. Remove crankshaft damper.
  36.  
  37. Remove front crankshaft oil seal.
  38.  
  39. Remove water pump pulley.
  40.  
  41. Remove engine mount bracket lower bolt.
  42.  
  43. Remove timing chain cover lower bolts.
  44.  
  45. Lower vehicle.
  46.  
  47. Remove power steering line support (1).

  49. Remove power steering pump and set aside.

  51. Support engine with a suitable jack and a block of wood under the oil pan.
  52.  
  53. Remove right engine mount to mount bracket bolts.
  54.  
  55. Remove accessory drive belt upper idler pulley.
  56.  
  57. Remove right engine mount bracket.
  58.  
  59. Remove accessory drive belt tensioner.
  60.  
  61. Remove timing chain cover retaining bolts.
  62.  
  63. Remove timing chain cover using pry points (1,2, 3).

  65. Remove timing chain cover out through the bottom of the vehicle.

To install:


NOTE
When using RTV, the sealing surfaces must be clean and free from grease and oil. When using RTV, parts should be assembled in 10 minutes and tighten to final torque within 45 minutes.

  1. Clean all sealing surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Apply Mopar engine sealant RTV (or equivalent) at the cylinder head to block parting line (1, 2).

  5. Apply Mopar® engine sealant RTV (or equivalent) as shown at the ladder frame to block parting line.

  7. Apply Mopar engine sealant RTV (or equivalent) as shown in the corner of the oil pan and block.

  9. Apply 2 mm bead of Mopar engine sealant RTV (or equivalent) to the oil pan as shown.

  11. Apply 2 mm bead of Mopar engine sealant RTV (or equivalent) to the engine block (1, 2) as shown.

  13. Install timing chain cover upward from under the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Install timing chain cover upper retaining bolts and tighten M6 bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm) and M8 bolts to 26 N·m (230 in lbs).
  16.  
  17. Install accessory drive belt tensioner.
  18.  
  19. Install right engine mount bracket.
  20.  
  21. Install accessory drive belt upper idler pulley.
  22.  
  23. Install right engine mount.
  24.  
  25. Remove jack from under engine.
  26.  
  27. Install power steering pump.
  28.  
  29. Raise vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Install oil pan to timing chain cover lower retaining bolts and tighten bolts.
  32.  
  33. Install timing chain cover retaining bolts and tighten bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).

  35. Install water pump pulley.
  36.  
  37. Install crankshaft pulley and tighten bolt.
  38.  
  39. Install accessory drive belt lower idler pulley.
  40.  
  41. Install lower A/C compressor mounting bracket.
  42.  
  43. Install A/C compressor.
  44.  
  45. Install accessory drive belt.
  46.  
  47. Install right lower splash shield.
  48.  
  49. Lower vehicle.
  50.  
  51. Install cylinder head cover.

  53. Connect coil electrical connectors.
  54.  
  55. Connect PCV hose to PCV valve.
  56.  
  57. Connect make up air hose.
  58.  
  59. Install power steering reservoir.
  60.  
  61. Install windshield washer bottle.
  62.  
  63. Install coolant recovery bottle.
  64.  
  65. Fill cooling system.
  66.  
  67. Install air cleaner housing inlet.
  68.  
  69. Connect negative cable to battery.
  70.  
  71. Install engine cover.
