Removal & Installation
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Turn the crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at Top Dead Center (TDC).
- Remove the engine appearance cover.
- Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
- Drain the cooling system.
- Drain the engine oil.
- Remove the coolant recovery bottle.
Remove the power steering reservoir mounting bolts and secure it aside.
NOTEDo not disconnect the power steering lines.
- Disconnect the fuel, make-up air hose, PCV hose and ignition coil electrical connectors.
- Remove the cylinder head cover. For additional information, refer to the following section, "Cylinder Head, Removal & Installation.-
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Remove the lower right engine splash shield.
- Remove the accessory drive belt.
- Remove the lower A/C compressor mounting bolt and remove the A/C compressor lower bracket.
- Remove the lower idler pulley and crankshaft pulley.
- Remove the front crankshaft oil seal by prying it out with a suitable pry tool.
- Remove the water pump pulley.
- Remove the engine mount bracket lower mounting bolt.
Remove the timing chain cover lower mounting bolts.
- Lower the vehicle.
Remove the power steering line support, then remove the power steering pump mounting bolts and secure it out of the way.
NOTEDo not disconnect the power steering lines.
Support the engine with a suitable jack.
NOTEWhen support the engine, use a block a wood between the jack and oil pan to avoid damage to the engine.
- Remove the remaining right engine mount-to-mount bracket bolts.
- Remove the upper idler pulley.
- Remove the right engine mount bracket.
- Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
Remove the timing chain cover mounting bolts.
- Using the pry points indicated, remove the timing chain cover out through the bottom of the vehicle.
- Matchmark the chain links corresponding to the camshaft timing marks.
- Match mark the chain link corresponding to the crankshaft timing mark.
- Remove the timing chain tensioner.
- Remove the timing chain.
- Remove the oil pump drive chain tensioner and oil pump drive chain. For additional information, refer to the following section, "Oil Pump, Removal & Installation.-
- Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
- Hold the camshaft in place on the camshaft flats using a wrench.
Remove the camshaft phaser assembly from the camshaft.
WARNINGThe camshaft phasers and camshaft sprockets are supplied as an assembly and should not be disassembled.
Using a wrench to hold the camshaft in place, install the phaser assembly to the camshaft.
NOTEEnsure the dowel is seated in the dowel hose and not in an oil feed hole. The dowel hole is larger than the four oil feed holes.
- Install the crankshaft sprocket onto the crankshaft.
- Install the oil pump drive chain and tensioner.
- Verify that the crankshaft sprocket keyway is at the 9 o'clock position.
Align the camshaft timing marks so they are parallel to the cylinder head and aligned each other as shown.
- If the timing chain guide was removed, install the timing chain guide and tighten the bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
- Install the timing chain so plated links on chain align with timing marks on camshaft sprockets.
Align the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket with the plated link on the timing chain. Position chain so slack will be on the tensioner side.
NOTEKeep the slack in the timing chain on the tensioner side.
- Install the moveable timing chain pivot guide, if removed, and tighten bolt to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
- Reset the timing chain tensioner by lifting up on the ratchet and pushing the plunger inward towards the tensioner body. Insert Special Tool 8514 Tensioner Pin into the slot to hold the tensioner plunger in the retracted position.
- Install the timing chain tensioner and tighten bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
- Remove the Tensioner Pin. Rotate the crankshaft CLOCKWISE two complete revolutions until the crankshaft is repositioned at the TDC position with the crankshaft keyway at the 9 o'clock position.
- Verify that the camshaft timing marks are in the proper position.
- Clean all of the sealing surfaces of the timing chain cover.
Apply Mopar® engine sealant RTV or equivalent as shown at the cylinder head-to-block parting line.
Apply Mopar® engine sealant RTV or equivalent as shown at the ladder frame-to-block parting line.
- Apply Mopar® engine sealant RTV or equivalent in the corner of the oil pan and block.
Apply a 2 mm bead of Mopar® engine sealant RTV or equivalent to the oil pan as shown.
Apply a 2 mm bead of Mopar® engine sealant RTV or equivalent to the engine block as shown.
- Install the timing chain cover upwards from under the vehicle. Tighten the M6 bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm) and tighten the M8 bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
- The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal procedure.
- Refill the cooling system to the correct level.
- Refill the engine with oil to the correct level.
- Start the engine and check for leaks.
