Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



3.8L Engine
Automatic Transmission
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the starter motor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the torque converter inspection cover.
  12.  
  13. Use special tool J 37096 or a suitable tool in order to hold the flexplate.
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt from the balancer.
  16.  
  17. Remove the crankshaft balancer using special tool J 38197-A or a suitable remover.
  18.  
  19. Remove the key from the crankshaft.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the seal surface of the crankshaft balancer with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the key and align the key slot in the balancer to the key slot in the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft balancer and tighten the bolt to 111 ft. lbs. plus an additional 114° (150 Nm plus an additional 114°)
  6.  
  7. Install the torque converter inspection cover and securely tighten the bolts.
  8.  
  9. Install the starter motor.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Install the drive belt.
  14.  
  15. Reconnect negative battery cable.
  16.  

Manual Transmission
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the starter motor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the transmission brace.
  12.  
  13. Remove the flywheel housing inspection cover.
  14.  
  15. Use special tool J 37096 or a suitable tool in order to hold the flywheel.
  16.  
  17. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt from the balancer.
  18.  
  19. Remove the crankshaft balancer using special tool J 38197-A or a suitable remover.
  20.  
  21. Remove the key from the crankshaft.

To install:

  1. Lubricate the seal surface of the crankshaft balancer with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the key and align the key slot in the balancer to the key slot in the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft balancer and tighten the bolt to 111 ft. lbs. plus an additional 114° (150 Nm plus an additional 114°)
  6.  
  7. Install the flywheel housing inspection cover and tighten the bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
  8.  
  9. Install the transmission brace and tighten the bolts as follows:

    Tighten the brace bolts to the engine block to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm)
     
    Tighten the brace bolts to the transmission to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
     

  10.  
  11. Install the starter motor.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Install the drive belt.
  16.  
  17. Reconnect negative battery cable.
  18.  

5.7L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the starter motor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the right transmission cover and bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the transmission oil cooler lines from the oil cooler clip near the alternator.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines at the radiator.
  16.  
  17. Remove the power steering cooler, if equipped.
  18.  
  19. Install the J 42386-A or a suitable flywheel/flexplate holder.
  20.  
  21. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt. Do not discard the crankshaft balancer bolt. The balancer bolt will be used during the balancer installation.
  22.  
  23. Remove the crankshaft balancer using a suitable remover.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer.
  2.  
  3. Notes:

    The used crankshaft balancer bolt will be used only during the first pass on the balancer installation procedure. Install a NEW crankshaft balancer bolt and tighten as described in the second, third and final passes of the balancer bolt tightening procedure.
     
    The crankshaft balancer installation and bolt tightening involves a four stage tightening process. The first pass ensures that the balancer is installed completely onto the crankshaft. The third, and fourth passes tighten the new bolt to the proper torque.
     
    The balancer should be positioned onto the end of the crankshaft as straight as possible prior to tool installation.

  5. Install the crankshaft balancer onto the end of the crankshaft using a suitable installer.
  6.  
  7. Install the used crankshaft balancer bolt and tighten to 240 ft. lbs. (330 Nm)
  8.  
  9. Remove the used crankshaft balancer bolt.
    WARNING
    The nose of the crankshaft should be recessed 0.094-0.176 inch (2.40-4.48 mm) into the balancer bore.

  10.  
  11. Measure for a correctly installed balancer. If the balancer is not installed to the proper dimensions, repeat the installation procedure.
  12.  
  13. Install the NEW crankshaft balancer bolt and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
  14.  
  15. Turn the balancer bolt and additional 140°
  16.  
  17. Install the transmission oil cooler lines to the radiator and tighten the fittings to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm)
  18.  
  19. Install the power steering cooler, if equipped.
  20.  
  21. Install the transmission oil cooler lines into the oil cooler clip near the alternator.
  22.  
  23. Install the right transmission cover and tighten the bolt to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
  24.  
  25. Install the starter motor.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28.  
  29. Install the air conditioning (A/C) drive belt.
  30.  
  31. Reconnect negative battery cable.
