Cylinder Head

Removal & Installation



3.8L Engines
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Fuel lines from the fuel rail
     
    Upper and lower intake manifolds
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Left exhaust manifold
     
    Rocker arm cover, rocker arms and push rods
     
    Cylinder head bolts and cylinder head

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the cylinder head with a new gasket and secure with NEW head bolts.
  2.  
  3. Torque the head bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. Step 1: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Plus 120 degree turn.
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Rocker arms and push rods
     
    Rocker arm cover. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Left exhaust manifold
     
    Spark plugs and torque them to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Lower and upper intake manifolds
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  6.  
  7. Refill the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  10.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Fuel lines from the fuel rail
     
    Upper and lower intake manifolds
     
    Spark plugs
     
    Right exhaust manifold
     
    Rocker arm cover, rocker arms and push rods
     
    Cylinder head bolts and cylinder head

To install:

  1. Install the cylinder head with a new gasket and secure with NEW head bolts. Torque the bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. Step 1: 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: Plus a 120 degree turn
    4.

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Rear alternator brace. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Drive belt tensioner. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Rocker arms and push rods
     
    Rocker arm cover. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Right exhaust manifold. Torque the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Spark plugs. Torque the plugs to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     
    Lower and upper intake manifolds
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Refill the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

5.7L Engines
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant air bleed pipe
     
    Power steering pump pulley and hoses
     
    Power steering pump and bracket
     
    Exhaust manifold
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Rocker arm cover
     
    Rocker arms, pedestals and push rods
     
    Ground wires from the back of the head
     
    Cylinder head bolts and cylinder head

To install:

  1. Install the cylinder head with a new gasket.
    NOTE
    Before installing the head bolts, be sure to mark the short bolts so the correct tightening specifications are used.

  2.  
  3. Lubricate the M11 bolts with clean engine oil, then install them.
  4.  
  5. Apply a 0.2 inch (5mm) bead of threadlock GM P/N 12345382 to the threads of the M8 cylinder head bolts.
  6.  
  7. Torque the cylinder head bolts in sequence as follows:
    1. M11 bolts 1-10: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    2.  
    3. M11 bolts 1-10: an additional 90 degrees.
    4.  
    5. M11 bolts 1-8: an additional 90 degrees.
    6.  
    7. M11 bolts 9-10: an additional 50 degrees.
    8.  
    9. M8 bolts 11-15: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). Begin at the center and alternate side-to-side working outward.

  9. Install or connect the following:

    Ground wires to the back of the head. Torque the bolt to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Rocker arms, pedestals and push rods
     
    Exhaust manifold
     
    Rocker arm cover. Torque the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
     
    Power steering pump bracket. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
     
    Power steering pump. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Power steering pump hoses and pulley
     
    Coolant air bleed pipe
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Refill the cooling system.
  12.  
  13. Change the oil and filter.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  16.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Coolant air bleed pipe
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Exhaust manifold
     
    Rocker arm cover
     
    Rocker arms, pedestals and push rods
     
    Wiring clip bolt from the cylinder head
     
    Transmission dipstick tube bolt from the cylinder head
     
    Cylinder head bolts and cylinder head

To install:

  1. Install the cylinder head with a new gasket.
    NOTE
    Before installing the head bolts, be sure to mark the short bolts so the correct tightening specifications are used.

    5. M11 bolts 1-8: an additional 90 degrees.
    6.  
    7. M11 bolts 9-10: an additional 50 degrees.
    8.  
    9. M8 bolts 11-15: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). Begin at the center and alternate side-to-side working outward.

      Wiring clip bolt to the cylinder head
       
      Transmission dipstick tube bolt to the cylinder head
       
      Rocker arms, pedestals and push rods
       
      Exhaust manifold
       
      Rocker arm cover. Torque the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
       
      Coolant air bleed pipe
       
      Intake manifold
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    10.  

  8.  
  9. Refill the cooling system.
  10.  
  11. Change the oil and filter.
  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
