Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



3.8L Engines

NOTE
The rear main seal is a 1-piece unit. It can be removed or installed without removing the oil pan or crankshaft.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission
     
    Clutch and pressure plate, if equipped
     
    Flywheel
     
    Rear main seal
     

  4.  
  5. Inspect the crankshaft for nicks or burrs and correct as required.

To install:

  1. Coat the new seal entirely with engine oil.
  2.  
  3. Install the seal onto Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer J 38196.
  4.  
  5. Install the seal installer onto the rear of the crankshaft. Tighten the screws snugly in order to ensure that the seal will be installed squarely over the crankshaft.
  6.  
  7. Tighten the wing nut on installer tool, until it bottoms.
  8.  
  9. Remove the installer tool from the crankshaft.
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Flywheel
     
    Clutch and pressure plate, if equipped
     
    Transmission
     

  12.  
  13. Check the fluid levels.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  16.  

5.7L Engines

NOTE
The rear main seal is a 1-piece unit. It can be removed or installed without removing the oil pan or crankshaft.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission
     
    Clutch and pressure plate, if equipped
     
    Flywheel
     
    Rear main seal
     

  4.  
  5. Inspect the crankshaft for nicks or burrs and correct as required.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the outside diameter of the oil seal with clean engine oil. Do not allow oil or other lubricants to contact the seal surface.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the rear cover oil seal bore with clean engine oil. DO NOT allow oil or other lubricants to contact the crankshaft surface.
  4.  
  5. Install Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer J 41479 cone and bolts onto the rear of the crankshaft. Tighten the bolts until snug. Do not overtighten.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear oil seal onto the tapered cone and push the seal to the rear cover bore.
  8.  
  9. Thread the installer tool threaded rod into the tapered cone until the tool contacts the oil seal.
  10.  
  11. Align the oil seal onto the tool.
  12.  
  13. Rotate the tool handle of the tool clockwise until the seal enters the rear cover and bottoms out into the cover bore.
  14.  
  15. Remove the tool
  16.  
  17. Install or connect the following:

    Flywheel
     
    Clutch and pressure plate, if equipped
     
    Transmission
     

  18.  
  19. Check the fluid levels.
  20.  
  21. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  22.
