Removal & Installation



3.8L Engines
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Ignition control module
     
    Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve outlet pipe bolt from the upper intake manifold
     
    EGR valve outlet pipe nut from the EGR valve adapter
     
    EGR valve outlet pipe
     
    EGR valve electrical connector
     
    EGR valve adapter nuts
     
    EGR valve adapter bolt
     
    EGR valve adapter from the cylinder head studs
     
    Oil level indicator tube
     
    Engine lift bracket from the cylinder head studs
     
    Top ignition control module bracket bolt
     

  6.  
  7. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear ignition control module bracket bolts.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition control module bracket.
  14.  
  15. Loosen the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.
  18.  
  19. Clean the following items:

    Valve rocker arm cover
     
    Cylinder head gasket surface
     
    Valve rocker arm cover bolts
     

  20.  

To install:

  1. Apply threadlock GM P/N 12345382, Canada P/N 10953489, or equivalent, to the valve rocker arm cover bolt threads.
  2.  
  3. Install the valve rocker arm cover and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
  4.  
  5. Install the ignition control module bracket.
  6.  
  7. Raise the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Install the rear ignition control module bracket bolts and tighten the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Install the top ignition control module bracket bolt and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
  14.  
  15. Install the engine lift bracket to the cylinder head studs and tighten the studs to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
  16.  
  17. Install the oil level indicator tube.
  18.  
  19. Install the EGR valve adapter to the cylinder head studs.
  20.  
  21. Install the EGR valve adapter bolt and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
  22.  
  23. Install the EGR valve adapter nuts. and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
  24.  
  25. Connect the EGR valve electrical connector.
  26.  
  27. Install the EGR valve outlet pipe.
  28.  
  29. Install the EGR valve outlet pipe nut to the EGR valve adapter and tighten to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm)
  30.  
  31. Install the EGR valve outlet pipe bolt to the upper intake manifold and tighten to 21 ft. lbs. (29 Nm)
  32.  
  33. Install the ignition control module.
  34.  
  35. Reconnect negative battery cable.
  36.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Remove the alternator.
  6.  
  7. Remove the spark plug wires from the 1, 3 and 5 spark plugs.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spark plug wiring harness from the clip and reposition the harness.
  10.  
  11. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear engine left bracket bolt and stud.
  14.  
  15. Remove the rear engine lift bracket.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil fill tube, if necessary.
    1. To remove the fill tube press the tangs inside the tube in and twist the tube.
    2.

  25. Clean the following items:

    Valve rocker arm cover
     
    Cylinder head gasket surface
     
    Valve rocker arm cover bolts

To install:

  1. Install the oil fill tube to the valve rocker arm cover, if removed.
  2.  
  3. Apply threadlock GM P/N 12345382, Canada P/N 10953489, or equivalent to the valve rocker arm cover bolt threads.
  4.  
  5. Install the valve rocker arm cover and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Install the rear engine lift bracket.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear engine lift bracket stud and bolt and tighten the stud and bolt to 22 inch lbs. (30 Nm)
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Install the spark plug wiring harness to the clip.
  16.  
  17. Install the spark plug wires to the 1,3 and 5 spark plugs.
  18.  
  19. Install the alternator.
  20.  
  21. Reconnect negative battery cable.
  22.  

5.7L Engine
Left Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fuel feed pipe.
  6.  
  7. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve pipe from the rocker cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the ignition coils.
  10.  
  11. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) clip.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the ignition coil wire harness main electrical connector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the secondary air injection (AIR) pump hose from the AIR shut off valve. Separate the AIR pump hose, if necessary.
  16.  
  17. Remove the AIR switch valve bracket nut.
  18.  
  19. Remove the AIR shut off valve vacuum harness from the shut off valve.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the AIR switch valve bracket bolt on the rear of the cylinder head. Slide the AIR switch valve bracket off of the bolt.
  22.  
  23. Remove the AIR shut off valve hose clamps, hose, bolts and pipe with check valve.
  24.  
  25. Remove the ignition coil bracket studs from the rocker arm cover.
  26.  
  27. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts and rocker cover and discard the gasket.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Clean and inspect the rocker arm cover.

    All gasket surfaces should be free of oil and other foreign material during assembly.
     
    DO NOT reuse the valve rocker arm cover gasket.
     
    The valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets may be reused.
     
    If the PCV valve grommet has been removed from the rocker arm, install a NEW grommet during assembly.

  3. Install a NEW rocker cover gasket into the valve rocker cover lip.
  4.  
  5. Install the valve rocker arm cover onto the cylinder head with new rocker arm cover bolt grommets, if necessary and tighten the bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
  6.  
  7. Apply threadlock GM P/N 12345382, (Canadian P/N 10953489), or equivalent to the threads of the ignition coil bracket studs and tighten the studs to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
  8.  
  9. Install the AIR pipe with a new gasket and tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
  10.  
  11. Install the AIR shut off valve hose and clamps.

    Slide the AIR switch valve bracket behind the bolt.
     
    Tighten the AIR switch valve bracket bolt.
     
    Tighten the AIR switch valve bracket bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
     

  12.  
  13. Install the AIR switch valve bracket nut and tighten to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
  14.  
  15. Connect the AIR solenoid tube to the shut off valve.
  16.  
  17. Install the AIR shut off valve vacuum harness to the shut off valve.
  18.  
  19. Connect the AIR pump hose to the AIR shut off valve. Connect the AIR pump hoses together, if necessary.
  20.  
  21. Connect the ignition coil wire harness main electrical connector.
  22.  
  23. Install the CPA clip (1).
  24.  
  25. Install the spark plug wires to the ignitions coils.
  26.  
  27. Install the PCV valve pipe to the left rocker cover.
  28.  
  29. Install the fuel feed pipe.
  30.  
  31. Reconnect negative battery cable.
  32.  

Right Side
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    HVAC evaporator tube
     
    Secondary air injection (AIR) pump hose from the check valve
     
    AIR pipe bolts and AIR pipe with check valve
     
    Spark plug wires from the ignition coils
     
    Connector Position Assurance (CPA) clip
     
    Ignition coil wire harness main electrical connector
     
    Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve pipe from the rocker cover
     
    PCV valve pipe strap nut, if necessary
     
    PCV valve pipe from the intake manifold, if necessary
     
    Ignition coil bracket studs from the rocker arm cover
     
    Ignition coil bracket from the rocker arm cover
     
    Valve rocker arm cover bolts
     
    Valve rocker arm cover and discard the gasket.
     
    Oil fill cap from the oil fill tube
     
    Oil fill tube, if required, and discard.

To install:

  1. Clean and inspect the valve rocker arm cover.

    All gaskets surfaces should be free of oil and other foreign material during assembly.
     
    DO NOT reuse the valve rocker arm cover gasket.
     
    The valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets may be reused.
     
    If the oil fill tube has been removed from the rocker arm cover, install a NEW fill tube during assembly.
     

  2.  
  3. Lubricate the O-ring seal of the NEW oil fill tube with clean engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Insert the NEW oil fill tube into the rocker arm cover. Rotate the tube clockwise until locked in the proper position.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil fill cap into the tube. Rotate the cap clockwise until locked in the proper position.
  8.  
  9. Install a NEW gasket into the valve rocker lip.
  10.  
  11. Install the valve rocker arm cover onto the cylinder head.
  12.  
  13. Install NEW rocker arm cover bolt grommets, if necessary.
  14.  
  15. Install the rocker arm cover bolts and tighten to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
  16.  
  17. Apply threadlock GM P/N 12345382,(Canadian P/N 10953489), or equivalent to the threads of the bracket studs.
  18.  
  19. Install the ignition coil bracket to the rocker arm cover and tighten the studs to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
  20.  
  21. Install the PCV valve pipe to the intake manifold, if necessary, and tighten the nut to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm)
  22.  
  23. Install the PCV valve pipe to the rocker cover.
  24.  
  25. Connect the ignition coil wire harness main electrical connector.
  26.  
  27. Install the CPA clip.
  28.  
  29. Install the spark plug wires to the ignition coils.
  30.  
  31. Install a NEW AIR pipe gasket to the exhaust manifold.
  32.  
  33. Install the AIR pipe (with check valve) and tighten the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
  34.  
  35. Connect the AIR pump hose to the check valve.
  36.  
  37. Install the HVAC evaporator tube.
  38.  
  39. Reconnect negative battery cable.
  40.
