Removal & Installation




CAUTION
This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury and unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Disable the SIR system.
  6.  
  7. Remove the instrument panel driver knee bolster and deflector.
  8.  
  9. Ensure that the following components are in the LOCK position:

    Steering column lock
     
    Ignition cylinder
     

  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Steering column upper support nuts from the steering column support
     
    Steering column dash cover bolts
     
    Lower column
     
    Brake switches
     
    Electrical connectors from the dimmer switch
     
    Electrical connectors from the ignition switch
     
    Dimmer switch
     

  12.  
  13. Disconnect the ignition switch actuator rod.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition switch.
  16.  
  17. Remove the automatic transmission park lock cable, if equipped.

To install:

  1. Complete the following steps in order to ensure that the ignition switch is in the LOCK position:

    Move the switch slider to the extreme right position.
     
    Move the slider one detent to the left.
     
    Ensure that the following components are in the LOCK position:
     



    Steering column lock
     
    Ignition cylinder
     

  2.  
  3. Install the ignition switch to the jacket.
  4.  
  5. Install the ignition switch actuator rod to the ignition switch.
  6.  
  7. Install the bolt/screw and tighten to 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm)
  8.  
  9. Position the dimmer switch to the ignition switch and securely tighten the screws.
  10.  
  11. Complete the following procedures in order to adjust the dimmer switch:

    Press the switch mechanism slightly in order to insert a 3/32-inch drill bit.
     
    Move the dimmer switch in order to remove the lash.
     
    Tighten the screws to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm)
     

  12.  
  13. Install the electrical connectors to the dimmer switch and the ignition switch.
  14.  
  15. Install and adjust the parking brake switches.
  16.  
  17. Raise the column.
  18.  
  19. Install the steering column upper support nuts to the steering column support.
  20.  
  21. Install the steering column dash cover bolts and securely tighten.
  22.  
  23. Install the instrument panel driver knee bolster and deflector.
  24.  
  25. Reconnect negative battery cable.
  26.  
  27. Enable the SIR.
  28.
