Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the oil from the transmission.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Shift control lever boot assembly
     
    Shift control lever
     
    Propeller shaft
     
    Rear axle torque arm
     
    Right side catalytic converter
     
    Electrical connectors from the transmission
     
    Starter motor
     
    Wiring harness and bracket from the transmission
     
    Transmission brace bolts and the braces, on M49 transmissions
     
    Flywheel housing cover

  7. Depress the white circular release ring on the actuator hose and simultaneously pull on the master cylinder hose to disconnect.
  8.  
  9. Support the transmission.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Transmission support
     
    Transmission mounting bolts
     
    Transmission from the vehicle

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transmission to the vehicle. Torque the bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (73 Nm) on M49 transmissions and 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) on MM6 transmissions.
     
    Transmission support. Torque the bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (57 Nm).
     
    Clutch actuator hose to the clutch master cylinder hose.
     
    Flywheel housing cover and tighten the bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
     
    On M49 transmissions Transmission brace bolts and the braces. Tighten the right transmission brace bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Tighten the left transmission brace bolts (to transmission) to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and the bolts to the engine to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
     
    Wiring harness and bracket
     
    Electrical connectors
     
    Starter motor
     
    Right side catalytic converter. Torque the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    Rear axle torque arm. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) and the nuts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Propeller shaft. Torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
     
    Transmission oil drain plug. Torque the plug to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Refill the transmission with oil.
  4.  
  5. Bleed the clutch hydraulic system.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Shift control lever. Torque the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Shift control lever boot assembly
     
    Negative battery cable
