Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect battery negative cable from battery and properly isolate to prevent accidental reconnection.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear tire and wheels assemblies.
     
    Propeller shaft
     
    Rear stabilizer shaft
     

  8.  
  9. Use an adjustable lifting device in order to support the rear axle housing.

    Tie rod-to-rear axle bolt and nut
     
    Rear brake center hose from the rear brake hose junction block
     
    Rear springs
     
    Parking brake cables from the rear axle housing and the park brake actuators
     
    Electrical connector from the rear wheel speed sensor
     
    Rear axle torque arm
     
    Lower control arm-to-rear axle bolts, washers and nuts
     

  10.  
  11. With the aid of a helper, remove the rear axle housing.

To install:

  1. With the aid of a helper, install the rear axle housing.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Lower control arm-to-rear axle bolts, washers and nuts and tighten the bolts to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm)
     
    Rear axle torque arm
     
    Electrical connector to the rear wheel speed sensor
     
    Parking brake cables to the rear axle housing and the park brake actuators
     
    Rear springs
     
    Rear brake center hose to the rear brake hose junction block
     
    Rear tie rod-to-axle bolt and nut and tighten to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm)
     

  4.  
  5. Remove the adjustable lifting device from the rear axle housing.

    Rear stabilizer shaft
     
    Propeller shaft
     
    Bleed the brake system.
     

  6.  
  7. Install the rear tire and wheels assemblies.
  8.  
  9. Inspect the rear axle lubricant level.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Reconnect negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Road test the vehicle in order to ensure proper rear axle operation.
