Axle Shaft, Bearing & Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Rear axle housing cover
     
    Pinion gear shaft lock bolt
     
    Pinion gear shaft
     

  4.  
  5. Push the axle shaft into the housing in order to gain access to the rear axle shaft C-clip.
  6.  
  7. Remove the C-clip and remove the axle from the housing.
    WARNING
    Do not damage the rear wheel speed sensor reluctor wheel during axle shaft removal.

  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Brake backing plate
     
    Brake caliper mounting bracket
     
    Oil seal, by prying it out
     
    Rear wheel bearing with suitable puller

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new wheel bearing with gear oil.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    Be sure the splines on the end of the axle engage with the splines of the differential side gear.



    Wheel bearing, using suitable installation tool
     
    Oil seal, using suitable installation tool
     
    Rear brake caliper mounting bracket
     
    Brake backing plate
     
    Axle shaft and C-clip
     



    Pinion gear shaft
     
    Pinion gear shaft lock bolt. Torque the bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
     
    Rear axle housing cover with new gasket. Torque the bolts in a star pattern to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
     
    Rear brake rotor
     
    Wheel
