Differential Pinion Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the propeller shaft-to-drive pinion gear yoke, drive pinion gear and drive pinion yoke nut.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Use a container to catch the oil that may flow from the axle housing once the yoke is removed.


    NOTE
    It may be necessary to use a blunt chisel to drive the seal from the housing.



    Propeller shaft
     
    Drive pinion gear yoke nut using Pinion Flange Remover/Installer Tool J-8614-01 to hold the yoke and a socket wrench
     
    Drive pinion gear yoke using Tools J-8614-01, J-8614-2 and J-8614-3
     



    Pinion seal

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    New pinion seal, lubricated with chassis grease using pinion oil seal installer Tool J 8614-01 until it is flush with the housing
     
    Drive pinion gear yoke using Tool J 8614-01 and a socket wrench
     
    Drive pinion gear nut, tighten to 1 / 16 in. (1.59mm) beyond the alignment mark made earlier
     
    Propeller shaft. Torque the propeller shaft-to-pinion yoke bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) and the propeller shaft-to-center support to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm) for 2-piece shaft.

  3. Refill the axle housing.
