Testing

Hybrid

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

  1. Check that a spark occurs:
    1. Remove the plastic engine cover(s).
    2.
    3. Remove the intake air surge tank.
    4.
    5. Remove the ignition coils.
    6.
    7. Using a 0.63 inch (16 mm) plug wrench, remove the spark plugs.
    8.
    9. Install the spark plugs to each ignition coil, and connect the ignition coil connectors.
    10.
    11. Disconnect the injector connectors.
    12.
    13. Ground the spark plugs.
    14.
    15. Check that spark occurs at each plug while engine is being cranked.
      NOTE
Be sure to ground the spark plugs when checking. Replace the ignition coil if it receives an impact. Do not crank the engine for more than 2 seconds.

    16.
    17. If spark is not occurring on one or more of the coils, check that the wire harness side connector of the ignition coil is securely connected.
    18.

  2.
  3. Replace the ignition coil with a known good one.
  4.
  5. Perform the spark test again.
    1. If no spark occurs replace the coil.
    2.

  6.
  7. Check the power supply to the ignition coil as follows:
    1. Turn the ignition switch ON.
    2.
    3. Check that there is battery voltage at the ignition coil positive (+) terminal.
    4.
    5. If no voltage is present, check wiring between engine switch and ignition coil.
    6.

  8.

Non-hybrid

    16.
    17. If spark is not occurring on one or more of the igniters, check that the wire harness side connector of the ignition coil with igniter is securely connected.
    18.

  2.
  3. Replace the ignition coil with igniter with a known good one.
  4.
  5. Perform the spark test again.
    1. If no spark occurs replace igniter.
    2.

  6.
  7. Check the power supply to the ignition coil with igniter:
    1. Turn the ignition switch ON.
    2.
    3. Check that there is battery voltage at the ignition coil positive (+) terminal.
    4.
    5. If no voltage is present, check wiring between engine switch and ignition coil with igniter.
    6.

  8.
  9. For 3.5L engines, check the VVT sensor output voltage:
    1. Check that there is resistance between ECM and VVT sensor. If there is no resistance, replace VVT sensor. If there is resistance, repair wiring between VVT sensor and ECM.
    2.

  10.
  11. Check the resistance of the crankshaft position sensor.
  12.
  13. Check IGT signal from the ECM.
    1. If no signal is present, repair wiring.
