Inspection

Visually check the V-ribbed belt for excessive wear, frayed cords, etc. If any defect has been found, replace the V-ribbed belt.



Cracks on the rib side of a belt are considered acceptable. If the belt has chunks missing from the ribs, it should be replaced
 
A "new belt" is a belt which has been used for less than 5 minutes with the engine running
 
A "used belt" is a belt which has been used for 5 minutes or more with the engine running
 

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine
Hybrid

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right hand front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right hand engine under cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right hand front fender apron seal.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 bolts and V-ribbed belt tensioner cover.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the V-ribbed belt tensioner counterclockwise, then remove the V-ribbed belt.
    NOTE
    When retracting the tensioner, turn it clockwise slowly. Do not apply force rapidly.

To install:

  1. Loosen the V-ribbed belt tensioner arm counterclockwise, then install the V-ribbed belt.
  2.  
  3. If it is difficult to install the V-ribbed belt, perform the following procedure:

    Put the V-ribbed belt on every pulley except the tensioner pulley as shown in the illustration.
     
    While releasing the belt tension by turning the belt tensioner counterclockwise, put the V-ribbed belt on the tensioner pulley.
     
    After installing the V-ribbed belt, check that it fits properly in the ribbed grooves. Check to confirm that the belt has not slipped out of the grooves on the bottom of the crank pulley by hand.

  5. Install the V-ribbed belt tensioner cover with the 2 bolts. Tighten to 89 inch. lbs. (9 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the right hand front fender apron seal.
  8.  
  9. Install the right hand engine under cover.
  10.  
  11. After installing the V-ribbed belt, check that it fits properly in the ribbed grooves. Check to confirm that the belt has not slipped out of the grooves on the bottom of the crank pulley by hand.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the right hand front wheel to: 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  14.  

Non-hybrid

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Remove the right hand front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right hand engine under cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right hand front fender apron seal.
    NOTE
    Before removing, take note of the following:



    Be sure to connect Special Tool: 09216-42010 and the tools so that they are in line during use
     
    When retracting the tensioner, turn it clockwise slowly for 3 seconds or more. Do not apply force rapidly
     
    After the tensioner is fully retracted, do not apply force any more than necessary

  9. Using the Special Tool and a 19 mm socket wrench, loosen the v-ribbed belt tensioner arm clockwise, then remove the v-ribbed belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the v-ribbed belt.
  12.  

To install:

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. After installing the V-ribbed belt, check that it fits properly in the ribbed grooves. Check to confirm that the belt has not slipped out of the grooves on the bottom of the crank pulley by hand.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the right hand front wheel to: 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).

3.5L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right hand front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right hand front fender apron seal.
  6.  
  7. Remove the V-bank cover sub-assembly.
  8.  
  9. Using Special Tool: 09249-63010, release the belt tension by turning the belt tensioner counterclockwise, and remove the V-ribbed belt from the belt tensioner.
  10.  
  11. While turning the belt tensioner counterclockwise, align with its holes and then insert the 5 mm bi-hexagon wrench into the holes to fix the V-ribbed belt tensioner.
  12.  
  13. Remove the v-ribbed belt.
  14.  

To install:

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. If it is difficult to install the V-ribbed belt, perform the following procedure:
    1. Put the V-ribbed belt on every pulley except the tensioner pulley.
    2.  
    3. While releasing the belt tension by turning the belt tensioner counterclockwise, put the V-ribbed belt on the tensioner pulley.
      NOTE
      Put the backside of the V-ribbed belt on the tensioner pulley and idler pulley. Check that the V-ribbed belt is properly set to each pulley.

  5. After installing the V-ribbed belt, check that it fits properly in the ribbed grooves. Check to confirm that the belt has not slipped out of the grooves on the bottom of the crank pulley by hand.

  7. Tighten the right hand front wheel to: 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
