  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Using a E10 Torx® socket, remove the stud bolt for the drive belt tensioner from the cylinder block.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 12 bolts and 2 nuts.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the timing chain cover, cylinder block and cylinder head.

  7. Remove the timing chain cover by prying between the timing chain cover and cylinder head or cylinder block with a screwdriver. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
  8.  
  9. Using a screwdriver and a hammer, tap out the oil seal.

NOTE
Keep the gap between the timing chain cover edge and the oil seal free of foreign matter.

  1. Using Special Tool: 09223-22010, tap in a new oil seal until its surface is flush with the timing chain cover edge. Apply a light coat of MP grease to the lip of the oil seal.
  2.  
  3. Remove any old packing (FIPG) material and be careful not to drop any oil on the contact surfaces of the timing chain cover, cylinder head and cylinder block.
  4.  
  5. Apply Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or Equivalent seal packing in a diameter of 0.157 to 0.177 inches (4.0 to 4.5 mm).
  6.  
  7. Apply seal packing in a continuous bead as shown in the illustration below.
    NOTE
    Remove any oil from the contact surface. Install the chain cover within 3 minutes after applying seal packing. Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installing.

  9. Install the timing chain cover with the twelve bolts and two nuts in sequence to the following torque specification:

    Bolt A length: 1.18 inches (30 mm) for 10 mm head: 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm)
     
    Bolt B length: 1.18 inches (30 mm) for 12 mm head: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
     
    Bolt C length: 1.57 inches (40 mm) for 14 mm head: 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm)
     
    Nut: 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm)

  11. Using a E10 Torx® socket, install the stud bolt to the drive belt tensioner and tighten to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

3.5L Engine

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine assembly with transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Secure engine.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil filler cap sub-assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spark plugs and ignition coil assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan drain plug and gasket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ventilation valve sub-assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the camshaft position sensor.
  16.  
  17. Remove the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove crankshaft position sensor.
  20.  
  21. Remove the No. 1 oil pipe.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil pipe.
  24.  
  25. Remove the cylinder block water drain cock sub-assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the oil filter.
  28.  
  29. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  30.  
  31. Remove the left hand No. 1 front engine mounting bracket.
  32.  
  33. Remove the water inlet housing.
  34.  
  35. Remove the water outlet.
  36.  
  37. Remove the left-hand cylinder head cover sub-assembly and gasket.
  38.  
  39. Remove the cylinder head cover sub-assembly and gasket.
  40.  
  41. Remove the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly.
  42.  
  43. Remove the oil strainer sub-assembly.
  44.  
  45. Remove the oil pan sub-assembly.
  46.  
  47. Remove the water pump assembly.
  48.  
  49. Remove the timing chain cover sub-assembly, as follows:
    1. Remove the 15 bolts and 2 nuts as shown in the illustration.
      NOTE
      Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder head, cylinder block and chain cover.

    3. Remove the timing chain cover by prying between the timing chain cover and cylinder head or cylinder block with a screwdriver with the tip taped.

    5. Remove the 4 bolts, chain cover plate and gasket.
    6.  
    7. Remove the gasket.

To install:

  1. Install timing gear case or timing chain cover oil seal, as follows:
    NOTE
    Keep the lip free from foreign matter.


    NOTE
    Do not tap on the oil seal at an angle.


    NOTE
    Make sure that the oil seal edge does not stick out of the timing chain cover.

    1. Apply MP grease to a new oil seal lip.
    2.  
    3. Using SST (SST: 09316-60011) and a hammer, tap in the oil seal until its surface is flush with the timing chain cover edge.
      NOTE
      Be sure to clean and degrease the contact surfaces, especially the surfaces indicated by C in the illustration.


      NOTE
      When the contact surfaces are wet, wipe them with an oil-free cloth before applying seal packing.


      NOTE
      Install the chain cover within 3 minutes after applying seal packing.


      NOTE
      Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installing.

  3. Install the timing chain cover sub-assembly, as follows:
    1. Apply seal packing (Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent) in a continuous line to the engine unit as shown in the illustration. Seal diameter: 3.0 mm (0.118 in.).
      NOTE
      When the contact surfaces are wet, wipe them with an oil-free cloth before applying seal packing.


      NOTE
      Install the crankcase within 3 minutes and tighten the bolts within 15 minutes after applying seal packing.


      NOTE
      Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installing.

    3. Apply seal packing in a continuous line to the timing chain cover as shown in the following illustration. Seal packing: Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent, Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1282B, Three Bond 1282B or equivalent.

    5. Install a new gasket.
    6.  
    7. Align the oil pump's drive rotor spline and the crankshaft as shown in the illustration. Install the spline and chain cover to the crankshaft.

    9. Loosely install the timing chain cover with the 23 bolts and 2 nuts, but do not tighten the bolts and 2 nuts yet.
      CAUTION
      Make sure that there is no oil on the bolt and nut threads.

    10.  
    11. Fully tighten the bolts in this order: Area 1 and Area 2, tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
    12.  
    13. Fully tighten the bolts in Area 3 to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm). Tighten the bolts and nuts in the order of upper to lower as shown in the illustration.
    14.  
    15. Fully tighten the bolts in Area 4 to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm), and to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm). Tighten the bolts and nuts in the order of lower to upper as shown in the illustration.

      Bolt A: 1.57 inches (40 mm)
       
      Bolt B: 2.17 inches (55 mm)
       
      Bolt C: 0.98 inches (25 mm)

  5. Install the water pump assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the water inlet housing.
  8.  
  9. Install the left hand No. 1 front engine mounting bracket.
  10.  
  11. Install the oil pan sub-assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install the oil strainer sub-assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly.
  16.  
  17. Install the oil pan drain plug and gasket.
  18.  
  19. Install the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.
  20.  
  21. Install the left-hand cylinder head cover sub-assembly.
  22.  
  23. Install the water outlet.
  24.  
  25. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  26.  
  27. Install the oil filter.
  28.  
  29. Install the cylinder block water drain cock sub-assembly.
  30.  
  31. Install the No. 1 oil pipe.
  32.  
  33. Install the oil pipe.
  34.  
  35. Install the crankshaft position sensor.
  36.  
  37. Install the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.
  38.  
  39. Install the camshaft position sensor.
  40.  
  41. Install the ventilation valve sub-assembly.
  42.  
  43. Install the spark plugs and ignition coil assembly.
  44.  
  45. Install the oil filler cap sub-assembly.
  46.  
  47. Install the water pump assembly.
  48.  
  49. Install the engine assembly with transaxle.
