Removal & Installation



3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine assembly with transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Secure engine.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil filler cap sub-assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spark plugs and ignition coil assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan drain plug and gasket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ventilation valve sub-assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the camshaft position sensor.
  16.  
  17. Remove the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove crankshaft position sensor.
  20.  
  21. Remove the No. 1 oil pipe.
  22.  
  23. Remove the oil pipe.
  24.  
  25. Remove the cylinder block water drain cock sub-assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the oil filter.
  28.  
  29. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  30.  
  31. Remove the left hand No. 1 front engine mounting bracket.
  32.  
  33. Remove the water inlet housing.
  34.  
  35. Remove the water outlet.
  36.  
  37. Remove the left-hand cylinder head cover sub-assembly and gasket.
  38.  
  39. Remove the cylinder head cover sub-assembly and gasket.
  40.  
  41. Remove the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly.
  42.  
  43. Remove the oil strainer sub-assembly.
  44.  
  45. Remove the oil pan sub-assembly.
  46.  
  47. Remove the water pump assembly.
  48.  
  49. Remove the timing chain cover and seal.
  50.  
  51. Set no. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression, as follows:
    1. Temporarily tighten the pulley set bolt. Set the timing mark on the crank angle sensor plate to the RH block bore center line (TDC/compression).

    3. Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing gears are aligned with the timing marks of the bearing cap as shown in the illustration. If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°) and align the timing marks as above.

  53. Remove the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly, as follows:
    1. Move the stopper plate upward to release the lock, and push the plunger deep into the tensioner.
    2.  
    3. Move the stopper plate downward to set the lock, and insert a pin of -1.27 mm (0.05 in.) into the stopper plate's hole.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 2 bolts and chain tensioner.
    6.

  55. Remove the chain tensioner slipper.
  56.  
  57. Remove the chain sub-assembly, as follows:
    1. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise 10° to loosen the chain of the crankshaft timing sprocket.

    3. Remove the pulley set bolt.
    4.  
    5. Remove the chain from the crankshaft timing sprocket and place it on the crankshaft.
    6.  
    7. Turn the camshaft timing gear assembly on the right hand bank clockwise (approximately 60°) and set it as shown in the illustration. Be sure to loosen the chain between the banks.

    9. Remove the chain.

  59. Remove the idle sprocket assembly, as follows:
    1. Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, remove the No. 2 idle gear shaft, sprocket and No. 1 idle gear shaft.

  61. Remove the 2 bolts and the No. 1 chain vibration damper.
  62.  
  63. Remove the No. 2 chain vibration damper.
  64.  
  65. Remove the crankshaft timing sprocket, as follows:
    1. Remove the pulley set bolt.
    2.  
    3. Remove the crankshaft timing gear from the crankshaft.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 2 pulley set keys from the crankshaft.
    6.

  67. Remove the camshaft timing gears and No. 2 chain (for Right-hand Bank), as follows:
    1. While raising up the No. 2 chain tensioner, insert a pin of 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) into the hole to hold it.
    2.  
    3. Hold the hexagonal portion of the camshaft with a wrench, and remove the 2 bolts and 2 camshaft timing gears.
      NOTE
      Be careful not to damage the cylinder head with the wrench.


      NOTE
      Do not disassemble the camshaft timing gear assemblies.

    5. Remove the No. 2 chain.
    6.

  69. Remove the bolt and No. 2 chain tensioner.

  71. Remove the camshaft timing gears and No. 2 chain (for Left-hand Bank), as follows:
    1. While pushing down on the No. 3 chain tensioner, insert a pin of 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) into the hole to hold it.
    2.  
    3. Hold the hexagonal portion of the camshaft with a wrench, and remove the 2 bolts and 2 camshaft timing gears.
      NOTE
      Be careful not to damage the cylinder head with the wrench.


      NOTE
      Do not disassemble the camshaft timing gear assemblies.

    5. Remove the No. 2 chain.
    6.

  73. Remove the bolt and the No. 3 chain tensioner.

To install:

  1. Install the No. 2 chain tensioner assembly with the bolt and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
  2.  
  3. While pushing in the tensioner, insert a pin of 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) into the hole to hold it.
  4.  
  5. Install the camshaft timing gears and No. 2 chain (for Right-hand Bank), as follows:
    1. Align the mark plate with the timing marks (1-dot mark) of the camshaft timing gears as shown.

    3. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the bolt threads and bolt-seating surface.
    4.  
    5. Align the knock pin of the camshaft with pin hole of the camshaft timing gear. Install the camshaft timing gear and the right camshaft timing exhaust gear with the No. 2 chain installed.
    6.  
    7. Hold the hexagonal portion of the camshaft with the wrench and tighten the two bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Remove the pin from the No. 2 chain tensioner.
    10.

  7. Install the No. 3 chain tensioner assembly with the bolt and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
  8.  
  9. While pushing in the tensioner, insert a pin of 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) into the hole to hold it.
  10.  
  11. Install the camshaft timing gears and No. 2 chain (for Left-hand Bank), as follows:
    1. Align the mark plate (yellow) with the timing marks (2-dot mark) of the camshaft timing gears as shown.

    3. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the bolt threads and bolts seating surface.
    4.  
    5. Align the knock pin of the camshaft with pin hole of the camshaft timing gear. Install the camshaft timing gear and the left camshaft timing exhaust gear with the No. 2 chain installed.
    6.  
    7. Hold the hexagonal portion of the camshaft with the wrench and tighten the two bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Remove the pin from the No 2 chain tensioner.
    10.

  13. Install the No. 1 and 2 chain vibration dampers.
  14.  
  15. Install the timing gear set keys and crankshaft timing sprocket as shown in the illustration.

  17. Install the idle sprocket assembly, as follows:
    1. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the rotating surface of the No. 1 idle gear shaft.
    2.  
    3. Temporarily install the No. 1 idle gear shaft and idle sprocket with the No. 2 idle gear shaft while aligning the knock pin of the No. 1 idle gear with the knock pin groove of the cylinder block. Be careful of the idle gear direction.
    4.  
    5. Using a 10 mm hexagon wrench, tighten the No. 2 idle gear shaft to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
    6.  
    7. After installing the idle sprocket assembly, check that the idle sprocket turns smoothly.
    8.

  19. Install the chain sub-assembly, as follows:
    1. Align the mark plate and timing marks as shown in the illustration and install the chain. The camshaft mark plate is orange.

    3. Do not pass the chain over the crankshaft, just put it on.
    4.  
    5. Turn the camshaft timing gear assembly on the right bank counterclockwise to tighten the chain between the banks.
      NOTE
      When the idle sprocket assembly is reused, align the timing chain plate with the mark on the sprocket in order to tighten the chain between the banks.

    7. Align the mark plate and timing marks as shown in the illustration and install the chain onto the crankshaft timing sprocket. The crankshaft to mark plate is yellow.

    9. Temporarily tighten the pulley set bolt.
    10.  
    11. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to set it to the right-hand block bore more centerline. (TDC/compression).

  21. Install the chain tensioner slipper.
  22.  
  23. Install the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly, as follows:
    1. Move the stopper plate upward to release the lock, and push the plunger deep into the tensioner.
    2.  
    3. Move the stopper plate downward to set the lock, and insert a hexagon wrench into the hole of the stopper plate.

    5. Install the No. 1 chain tensioner with the 2 bolts and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Remove the lock pin of the No. 1 chain tensioner. Check that each timing mark is aligned with the crankshaft at TDC/compression.

    9. Remove the pulley set bolt.

  25. Install timing chain cover and seal.

  27. Install the water pump assembly.

  29. Install the water inlet housing.

  33. Install the oil pan sub-assembly.

  35. Install the oil strainer sub-assembly.

  37. Install the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly.

  39. Install the oil pan drain plug and gasket.
  40.  
  41. Install the cylinder head cover sub-assembly.
  42.  
  43. Install the left-hand cylinder head cover sub-assembly.
  44.  
  45. Install the water outlet.
  46.  
  47. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  48.  
  49. Install the oil filter.
  50.  
  51. Install the cylinder block water drain cock sub-assembly.
  52.  
  53. Install the No. 1 oil pipe.
  54.  
  55. Install the oil pipe.
  56.  
  57. Install the crankshaft position sensor.
  58.  
  59. Install the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.
  60.  
  61. Install the camshaft position sensor.
  62.  
  63. Install the ventilation valve sub-assembly.
  64.  
  65. Install the spark plugs and ignition coil assembly.
  66.  
  67. Install the oil filler cap sub-assembly.
  68.  
  69. Install the engine assembly with transaxle.
