Wheel Bearings

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove front wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove front axle hub nut.
  6.  
  7. Separate front speed sensor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the front disc brake caliper assembly from the steering knuckle. Use wire or an equivalent tool to keep the brake caliper from hanging down by the flexible hose.
  10.  
  11. Remove front disc.
  12.  
  13. Separate tie rod end sub-assembly.
  14.  
  15. Separate front suspension lower no. 1 arm.
  16.  
  17. Remove front axle assembly.
  18.  
  19. Using a screwdriver with its tip wrapped with vinyl tape, remove the No. 1 front wheel bearing dust deflector. Be careful not to damage the steering knuckle.

  21. Using snap ring pliers, remove the front axle hub hole snap ring.
  22.  
  23. Remove front axle hub sub-assembly by performing the following:
    1. Hold the front axle assembly between aluminum plates in a vise.
      NOTE
      Do not overtighten the vise.

    2.  
    3. Using SST 09520-00031, remove the front axle hub sub-assembly.
      NOTE
      Be careful not to drop the front axle hub sub-assembly.

    5. Using SST 09555-55010, SST: 09950-60010 and SST: 09950-70010 and a press, remove the bearing inner race (outside) from the front axle hub sub-assembly.

  25. Remove the 4 bolts and disc brake dust cover from the steering knuckle.

  27. Remove front lower ball joint assembly.
  28.  
  29. Remove front axle hub bearing by performing the following:
    1. Place the bearing inner race (outside) on the front axle hub bearing.
    2.  
    3. Using SST 09527-17011, SST: 09950-60010 and a press, press the front axle hub bearing until it contacts the SST: 09950-70010.

    5. Using SST: 09527-20011, SST: 09950-60010 to make the steering knuckle horizontal, fix it to the V-block.

  31. Using SST : 09950-70010 and a press, remove the front axle hub bearing from the steering knuckle.

To install:

  1. Using SST-s: 09950-60020, 09950-70010 and a press, install a new front axle hub bearing to the steering knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install front lower ball joint assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the disc brake dust cover to the steering knuckle with the 4 bolts and tighten to 73 inch lbs. (8.3 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Using SST-s: 09608-32010, 09950-60020, 09950-70010 and a press, install the front axle hub sub-assembly.

  9. Using snap ring pliers, install a new front axle hub hole snap ring.
    NOTE
    Align the hole for the speed sensor in the No. 1 front wheel bearing dust deflector with the steering knuckle.

  11. Using SST-s: 09316-60011, 09608-32010 and a hammer, install a new No. 1 front wheel bearing dust deflector.
    NOTE
    Only when reusing the bolts and nuts, apply the small amount of engine oil to the screw part of the nuts.


    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the drive shaft boot or speed sensor rotor.

  13. Align the matchmarks and install the front drive shaft assembly to the front axle hub sub-assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the steering knuckle with the front axle hub sub-assembly to the front shock absorber assembly with the 2 bolts and 2 nuts and tighten to 155 ft. lbs. (210 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the lower No. 1 front suspension arm sub-assembly.
  18.  
  19. Install the tie rod end sub-assembly.
  20.  
  21. Install the front disc.
  22.  
  23. Install the front disc brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts to the steering knuckle and tighten to 79 ft. lbs. (107 Nm).

  25. Clean the threaded parts on the drive shaft and axle hub nut using a non-residue solvent.
    NOTE
    Be sure to perform this work for a new drive shaft.


    NOTE
    Keep the threaded parts free of oil and foreign objects.

  27. Using a 30 mm socket wrench, install the front axle hub nut and tighten to 217 ft. lbs. (294 Nm).

  29. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the front disc brake caliper assembly from the steering knuckle.
  30.  
  31. Remove the front disc.
  32.  
  33. Inspect front axle hub bearing looseness.
  34.  
  35. Inspect front axle hub runout.
  36.  
  37. Install the front disc.
  38.  
  39. Install the front disc brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts to the steering knuckle and tighten to 79 ft. lbs. (107 Nm).
  40.  
  41. Install the front speed sensor.
  42.  
  43. Using a chisel and hammer, stake the axle hub nut.
  44.  
  45. Install the front wheel.
  46.  
  47. Inspect and adjust front wheel alignment.
  48.  
  49. Check ABS speed sensor signal.
  50.
