Adjustment



Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

  1. Adjust parking brake shoe clearance, as follows:
    1. Temporarily install the hub nuts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the shoe adjusting hole plug, turn the adjuster and expand the shoes until the disc locks.
    4.  
    5. Contract the shoe adjuster until the disc rotates smoothly. Standard: returns 8 notches
    6.  
    7. Check that the disc has no brake drag.
    8.  
    9. Install the shoe adjusting hole plug.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

  1. Remove the rear wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the rear disc brake caliper assembly. Do not disconnect the flexible hose from the disc brake caliper assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the parking brake shoe adjusting hole plug from the rear disc.
  6.  
  7. Release the parking brake and place the matchmarks on the rear disc and the axle hub.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear disc.
    NOTE
    If the disc cannot be removed easily, turn the shoe adjuster until the disc turns freely.

  11. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the 2 parking brake shoe return tension No. 1 springs.
  12.  
  13. Remove the parking brake shoe strut and the parking brake shoe strut compression spring.
  14.  
  15. Remove the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly, as follows:
    1. Release the claw of the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 cup.
    2.  
    3. Remove the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly as shown in the illustration.

    5. Remove the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 1 cup, the parking brake shoe hold down spring, the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 cup, and the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 1 pin.

  17. Remove the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set.

  19. Remove the parking brake shoe return tension No. 2 spring.
  20.  
  21. Remove the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly, as follows:
    1. Release the claw of the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 cup.
    2.  
    3. Remove the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly as shown in the illustration.

    5. Remove the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 1 cup, the parking brake shoe hold down spring, the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 cup, and the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 pin.

    7. Using needle-nose pliers, disconnect the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly from the parking brake shoe lever.
      NOTE
      Be careful not to damage the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly.

  23. Using a screwdriver, remove the C-washer, shim and the parking brake shoe lever.

  25. Remove the parking brake shoe guide plate set bolt and the parking brake shoe guide plate.

To install:

  1. Apply high temperature grease to the backing plate where it contacts the shoe.
  2.  
  3. Apply adhesive (Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1344, Three Bond 1344 or equivalent) to the threads of the parking brake shoe guide plate set bolt.
  4.  
  5. Install the parking brake shoe guide plate with the parking brake shoe guide plate set bolt and tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the parking brake shoe lever and shim to the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly with a new C-washer.
  8.  
  9. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly and parking brake shoe lever. Standard clearance: Less than 0.35 mm (0.014 in.).
  10.  
  11. If the clearance is not as specified, replace the shim with one of the correct size.
  12.  
  13. Install the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly as follows:
    1. Using needle-nose pliers, connect the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly to the parking brake shoe lever.
    2.  
    3. Install the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly with the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 pin, the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 cup, the parking brake shoe hold down spring and the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 1 cup.
    4.  
    5. Engage the claw of the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 cup to the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly.
    6.

  15. Install the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set, as follows:
    1. Apply high temperature grease to the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set as shown in the illustration.
    2.  
    3. Install the parking brake shoe return tension No. 2 spring to the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly and the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly.
    4.  
    5. Install the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set to the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly and the No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly.
    6.

  17. Install the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly as follows:
    1. Install the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly with the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 1 pin, parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 cup, parking brake shoe hold down spring and parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 1 cup.
    2.  
    3. Engage the claw of the parking brake shoe hold down spring No. 2 cup to the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly.

  19. Attach the parking brake shoe strut and the parking brake shoe strut compression spring to the No. 1 parking brake shoe assembly and No. 2 parking brake shoe assembly.
  20.  
  21. Using needle-nose pliers, install the 2 parking brake shoe return tension No. 1 springs. First install the front side spring and then the rear side spring.
  22.  
  23. Inspect parking brake installation and check that each part is installed properly.
    NOTE
    There should be no oil or grease on the friction surfaces of the shoe linings and discs.

  25. Install the rear disc.

  27. Install the parking brake shoe adjusting hole plug.

  29. Adjust parking brake shoe clearance.

  31. Install the rear disc brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts and tighten to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
  32.  
  33. Install the rear wheel.
  34.  
  35. Adjust the parking brake pedal travel.
  36.  
  37. Bed in parking brake shoes to discs, as follows:
    1. Drive the vehicle at about 31 mph (50 km/h) on a safe, level and dry road.
    2.  
    3. Depress the parking brake pedal with 34 lbs. (150 N) of force.
    4.

  39. Drive the vehicle about 0.25 miles (400 m) in this condition.
    1. Repeat this procedure 3 times using 5-minute intervals between each procedure to prevent the parking brake assembly from overheating.
    2.

  41. Remove the rear wheel.
  42.  
  43. Adjust parking brake shoe clearance.
  44.  
  45. For A/T vehicles, adjust the parking brake pedal travel.
  46.  
  47. For M/T vehicles, adjust the parking brake pedal travel.
  48.  
  49. Install the rear wheel and tighten the lug nuts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
