CAUTION
Models are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS.

NOTE
Be sure to turn the front wheels straight ahead when removing and installing the power steering link assembly.

NOTE
If disconnecting the steering sliding yoke and the pinion shaft of the power steering link assembly, be sure to put matchmarks before starting the operation.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.
  3. Place front wheels facing straight ahead.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.
  7. Remove front wheels.
  8.
  9. Separate steering sliding yoke, as follows:
    1. Secure the steering wheel with the seat belt in order to prevent rotation. This operation is useful to prevent damage to the spiral cable.
    2.
    3. Remove the bolt and slide the steering sliding yoke. Do not separate the steering sliding yoke from the power steering link assembly.
    4.
    5. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and the power steering link assembly.
    6.
    7. Separate the steering sliding yoke from the power steering link assembly.
    8.

  10.
  11. Separate both tie rod assemblies, as follows:
    1. Remove the cotter pin and the nut.
    2.
    3. Using SST: 09628-00011, separate the tie rod assembly LH from the steering knuckle.
    4.

  12.
  13. Remove engine assembly with transaxle.
  14.
  15. Disconnect pressure feed tube assembly, as follows:
    1. Using SST: 09023-12701, disconnect the pressure feed tube assembly (return tube side) from the power steering link assembly.

    4.
    5. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the pressure feed tube clamp.
      NOTE
Because the nut has its own stopper, do not turn the nut. Loosen the bolt with the nut fixed.

  18.
  19. If equipped, remove the power steering rack housing heat insulator from the power steering link assembly.
  20.

To install:

  1. If equipped, install the power steering rack housing heat insulator to the power steering link assembly.
  2.
  3. Install the power steering link assembly with the 2 bolts and 2 nuts. Tighten to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  4.
  5. Connect pressure feed tube assembly, as follows:
    1. Temporarily connect the pressure feed tube assembly to the power steering link assembly.
    2.
    3. Install the pressure feed tube assembly clamp with the 2 bolts and tighten to 87 inch lbs. (9.8 Nm).
      NOTE
Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 11.81 inches (300 mm).

      NOTE
This torque value is effective when SST is parallel to the torque wrench.

    4.
    5. Using SST: 09023-12701, tighten the pressure feed tube assembly (pressure feed tube side) to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
    6.
    7. Using SST: 09023-12701, tighten the pressure feed tube assembly (return tube side) to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
    8.

  6.
  7. Install engine assembly with transaxle.
  8.
  9. Connect both of the tie rod assemblies to the steering knuckle with the nut. Tighten to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm). Install a new cotter pin. Further tighten the nut up to 60° if the holes for the cotter pin are not aligned.
  10.
  11. Connect steering sliding yoke, as follows:
    1. Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and the steering link assembly.
    2.
    3. Install the bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    4.

  12.
  13. Install front wheels and tighten to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  14.
  15. Connect cable to negative battery terminal.
  16.
  17. Bleed power steering fluid.
  18.
  19. Check power steering fluid level.
  20.
  21. Check for power steering fluid leakage.
  22.
  23. Check for exhaust gas leaks.
  24.
  25. Place front wheels facing straight ahead.
  26.
  27. Inspect and adjust front wheel alignment.
