NOTE
Make sure that the front passenger seat is not occupied before performing the operation.


NOTE
Perform the zero point calibration and sensitivity check if any of the following conditions occur.



Occupant classification ECU is replaced
 
Accessories (seatback tray and seat cover, etc.) are installed
 
Front passenger seat is removed from the vehicle
 
Passenger airbag ON/OFF indicator (-OFF-) comes on when the front passenger seat is not occupied
 
Vehicle is brought to the workshop for repair due to an accident or a collision
 

Zero point calibration

  1. Zero point calibration and sensitivity check procedures.
    NOTE
    Make sure that zero point calibration has finished normally, and then perform the sensitivity check.

    1. Check that all of the following conditions are met:

      Vehicle is parked on a level surface
       
      No objects are placed on the front passenger seat
       
      Front passenger seat belt buckle switch is OFF
       

    2.  
    3. Adjust the seat position according to the following

      Slide direction: rearmost position
       
      Reclining angle: upright position
       
      Headrest height: lowest position
       
      Lifter height: lowest position
       

    4.  
    5. Turn the power switch off.
    6.  
    7. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    8.  
    9. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the tester on.
    10.  
    11. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical/Occupant Detection/Utility/Zero Point Calibration.
    12.  
    13. Perform the zero point calibration by following the prompts on the tester screen. If the test is OK, -Zero Point Calibration is complete-, is displayed.
      NOTE
      Refer to the Techstream operator-s manual for further details.


      NOTE
      If the zero point calibration does not complete, replace the front seat assembly RH.

Sensitivity Check

  1. Sensitivity check procedures.
    1. Turn the power switch off.
    2.  
    3. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    4.  
    5. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the tester on.
    6.  
    7. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical/Occupant Detection/Utility/Sensitivity Check.
    8.  
    9. Perform the sensitivity check by following the prompts on the tester screen.
      NOTE
      Refer to the Techstream operator-s manual for further details.

    10.  
    11. Confirm that the beginning sensor reading is within the standard value of -7 to 7 lb. (-3.2 to 3.2 kg).
    12.  
    13. Place a 66.16 lb. (30 kg) weight (ex. A 66.14 lb. (30 kg) of lead mass) onto the front passenger seat.
    14.  
    15. Confirm that the sensitivity is within the standard value of 59.52 to 72.75 lb. (27 to 33 kg).
      NOTE
      When performing the sensitivity check, use a solid metal weight (the check result may not appear properly if the weight made from liquid is used).


      NOTE
      If the sensitivity deviates from the specified range, retighten the bolts of the front passenger seat without deforming the seat rail. After performing this procedure, if the sensitivity is not within the specified range, replace the front seat assembly RH.

Curtain Shield Airbag

Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.

CAUTION
Be sure to read PRECAUTION above before servicing.

  1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
    NOTE
    Wait for 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable to prevent the airbag deflation.

  4.  
  5. Remove the seat track cover LH (manual seat).
  6.  
  7. Remove the inner seat track bracket cover LH (manual seat).

    1. Disconnect the connector.
      NOTE
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag.

    3. Remove the 4 clips.
    4.  
    5. Using a clip remover, remove the pin.

    7. Using needle nose pliers, remove the clip and curtain shield airbag from the body.

    9. Remove the 5 bolts and curtain shield airbag assembly.

    11. Remove the 4 clips and 4 spacers from the curtain shield airbag assembly.
      NOTE
      If the clips and spacers are removed, always replace them with new ones even if the may not appear to be damaged.

To install:

  1. Install the curtain shield airbag assembly.
    1. Install 4 new clips and spacers.
      NOTE
      Do not push in the pin.


      NOTE
      Make sure that the clips are installed in the correct direction.


      NOTE
      Make sure that the spacers are installed properly, in the correct direction, and that they are not damaged.

    3. Install the curtain shield airbag assembly with the 5 new bolts. Tighten to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
      NOTE
      Do not twist the curtain shield airbag assembly when installing it.

    5. Install the 4 clips with the curtain shield airbag assembly to the body panel.
      NOTE
      Make sure that the pins of the clips are pushed in firmly.

    7. Mark the clips.
      NOTE
      Mark the clips to make sure that they are not reused.

    9. Connect the connector.
      NOTE
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

  3. Remove the front door scuff plate LH.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cowl side trim sub assembly LH.
  6.  
  7. Remove the lower instrument panel finish panel LH.
  8.  
  9. Remove the driver side knee airbag assembly.
    1. Remove the 4 bolts.

    3. Disconnect the airbag connector.
      NOTE
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

    5. Disengage the 2 claws and remove the DLC3 connector.
    6.  
    7. Disengage the 2 hooks and remove the driver side knee airbag assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the driver side knee airbag assembly.
    1. Check that the ignition switch is off.
    2.  
    3. Check that the battery negative cable is disconnected.
      CAUTION
      Wait for 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable to prevent airbag deployment.

    5. Temporarily install the driver side knee airbag assembly with the 2 hooks.
    6.  
    7. Engage the 2 claws and install the DLC3 connector.
    8.  
    9. Install the driver side knee airbag assembly with the 4 bolts. Tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Connect the driver side knee airbag connector.
      NOTE
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

  3. Install the lower instrument panel finish panel LH.
  4.  
  5. Install the cowl side trim sub assembly LH.
  6.  
  7. Install the front door scuff plate LH.
  8.  
  9. Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal.
    NOTE
    Some systems need initialization after reconnecting the cable to the negative battery terminal.

  11. Inspect the SRS warning light.

Front Seat Side Airbag Assembly-Manual Seat

CAUTION

CAUTION
If the side airbag was deployed, replace the front seat assembly with a new one.

  1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
    CAUTION
    Wait for 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable to prevent the airbag deployment.

  3. Remove the front seat headrest assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the seat track cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the inner seat track bracket cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front seat assembly.

  11. Remove the vertical adjuster cover LH (driver seat).
  12.  
  13. Remove the vertical adjusting handle No. 2 (driver side).
  14.  
  15. Remove the reclining adjuster release handle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the front seat cushion shield.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front seat inner belt assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the front inner seat cushion shield.
  22.  
  23. Remove the front seat back board sub assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the front seat headrest support.
  26.  
  27. Remove the front seatback cover with the pad.
  28.  
  29. Remove the front seat side airbag assembly.
    1. Disengage the 5 clamps and disconnect the wire harness.

    3. Disengage the 2 clamps and disconnect the wire harness.

    5. Remove the 2 nuts and the front seat side airbag assembly.

CAUTION
The nuts must not be reused.


CAUTION
Make sure that the seat frame assembly is not deformed. If it is, replace it with a new one.

To install, reverse the removal procedure. After installation is complete, inspect the slide adjuster lock and the SRS warning light.

Front Seat Side Airbag Assembly-Power Seat

CAUTION
Be sure to read PRECAUTION thoroughly before servicing.

  1. Remove the front seat headrest assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the seat track cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the inner seat track bracket cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front seat assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the reclining power seat switch knob.
  10.  
  11. Remove the slide and vertical power seat switch knob.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front seat cushion shield assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the front seat inner belt assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the front inner seat cushion shield.
  18.  
  19. Remove the front seat back board sub assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the front seat headrest support.
  22.  
  23. Remove the front separate type seat back assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the front seat side airbag assembly.
    1. Disconnect the 4 wire harness clamps from under the seat.

    5. Remove the 2 nuts and the front seat side airbag assembly.

To install:


CAUTION
The nuts must not be reused.


CAUTION
Make sure that the seat frame assembly is not deformed. If it is, replace it with a new one.

  1. Install the front seat side airbag assembly.
    1. Install the front seat side airbag assembly with the 2 new nuts. Tighten to 49 inch lbs. (5.5 Nm).

    3. Connect the 2 clamps.
    4.  
    5. Connect the 4 wire harness clamps to under the seat.
    6.

  3. Reverse the remaining removal procedures to complete installation.
  4.  
  5. Check the SRS warning light.
  6.  
  7. Inspect the front seat assembly.
