Operation



Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

The accelerator pedal position sensor is mounted on the accelerator pedal bracket. The accelerator pedal position sensor has 2 sensor elements and 2 signal outputs: VPA and VPA2. The ECM monitors the actual accelerator pedal opening angle (throttle valve opening angle) through the signals from VPA and VPA2, and controls the throttle actuator according to these signals.

Toyota Camry 2009-2010

The Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor is a Linear Potentiometer that monitors the accelerator pedal position. The APP Sensor operates within a 5 volt DC reference range, and provides a linear input signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM uses data from the APP Sensor to calculate air-fuel mixture, ignition timing, fuel injector pulse width, and transmission/transaxle gear position.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove left center floor carpet cover.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the accelerator pedal connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the 2 nuts and accelerator pedal assembly.
    NOTE
    Avoid physical shock to the accelerator pedal assembly.


    NOTE
    Do not disassemble the accelerator pedal assembly.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the accelerator pedal rod nuts to 43 inch lbs. (5.4 Nm).

Testing



Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

  1. Using OBD II tester, test the voltage of the APP sensor.
  2.  
  3. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).
  4.  
  5. Turn the OBD II tester ON.
  6.  
  7. Select the menu items: DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBD II/DATA LIST/ALL/ACCEL POS #1, ACCEL POS #2.
  8.  
  9. Operate the accelerator pedal, and then check that the ACCEL POS #1 and ACCEL POS #2 values are within the specifications.
  10.  
  11. Standard voltage (ACCEL POS #1):

    Accelerator Pedal Condition: Released. Specified Condition: 0.5 to 1.1 volts
     
    Accelerator Pedal Condition: Depressed. Specified Condition: 2.5 to 4.5 volts

  13. Standard voltage (ACCEL POS #2):

    Accelerator Pedal Condition: Released. Specified Condition: 1.2 to 2.0 volts
     
    Accelerator Pedal Condition: Depressed. Specified Condition: 3.4 to 5.0 volts

  15. If the result is not as specified, check the accelerator pedal rod, wire harness or ECM.
  16.  
  17. Complete testing of the APP system requires proprietary testing equipment.

Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2009-2010

A properly operating APP Sensor should display a linear -sweep- of the entire accelerator pedal range, and should not exhibit any voltage drop or signal break. If the feedback signal is not within the specified range, additional diagnosis is required in order to determine the proper function of the APP Sensor, or if a fault exists in any related sub-systems.

Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor Strategy

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2009-2010

The APP Sensor provides a linear input signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), which is used to monitor the throttle position. The APP Sensor monitors the entire range of throttle opening from 0.5 volts DC (0%) 4.5 volts DC (100%). In modern drive-by-wire throttle control systems, the APP Sensor provides data to the PCM in order to calculate the desired throttle position, in addition to air-fuel mixture, ignition timing, fuel injector pulse width, and transmission/transaxle gear position.

The APP Sensor utilizes positive coefficient logic: as the accelerator position is increased, the voltage is increased.

Connection & Wiring Diagnosis

Refer to the Electrical Wiring Diagram for component and connector locations, connector views, and circuit-specific information.

Many intermittent open or short circuits may be caused by wiring harness and connector movement due to vibration, engine torque, bumps and rough pavement, etc.

  1. Test the wiring harness and connectors by performing the following tests:

    Move the related connectors and wiring while monitoring the appropriate scan tool data.
     
    Move the related connectors and wiring with the component commanded ON and OFF. Using a suitable the scan tool, observe the component operation.
     
    With the engine running, move the related connectors and wiring while monitoring component operation.
     
    If harness or connector movement affects the data displayed, the component and system operation, or the engine operation, inspect and repair the harness or connections as necessary.

  3. Test the connector terminal pins and/or wiring by performing the following tests:

    Inspect for incorrect mating of the connector halves, or terminals not fully seated in the connector body.
     
    Inspect for improperly formed or damaged terminals and test for incorrect terminal tension.
     
    Inspect for poor terminal to wire connections including terminals crimped over insulation. This requires removing the terminal from the connector body.
     
    Inspect for corrosion or water intrusion. Pierced or damaged insulation can allow moisture to enter the wiring. The conductor can corrode inside the insulation with little visible evidence. Look for swollen and/or brittle sections of wire in the suspect circuits.
     
    Inspect for wires that are broken inside the insulation by gently pulling on suspect sections of wiring.
