Operation



Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

Knock sensors are fitted onto the engine block to detect engine knocking. The knock sensor contains a piezoelectric element which generates a voltage when the engine block vibrates due to knocking. Any occurrence of engine knocking can be suppressed by delaying the ignition timing.

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2009-2010

The Knock Sensor (KS) is a piezo-electric (pressure-sensitive) electronic device that enables the Powertrain Control Module (PSM) to control the ignition timing for optimum performance, and to protect the engine from potentially damaging levels of detonation. The PCM uses the KS system to test for abnormal engine noise that may indicate detonation, which is also known as spark knock.

Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008


CAUTION
Observe all applicable safety precautions when working around fuel. Whenever servicing the fuel system, always work in a well ventilated area. Do not allow fuel spray or vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher near the work area. Always keep fuel in a container specifically designed for fuel storage; also, always properly seal fuel containers to avoid the possibility of fire or explosion.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Properly discharge the fuel system pressure.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove plastic engine cover.
  8.  
  9. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  10.  
  11. Remove windshield wiper arms and blade assemblies.
  12.  
  13. Remove both front fender to cowl side seals.
  14.  
  15. Remove cowl top ventilator louver sub-assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove windshield wiper motor and link.
  18.  
  19. Remove the four bolts, four nuts and cowl top panel outer sub-assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove air cleaner cap sub-assembly.
  22.  
  23. Remove air cleaner case sub-assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove throttle body.
  26.  
  27. Disconnect fuel tube.
  28.  
  29. Remove fuel delivery pipe with injector.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the union to check valve hose from the brake booster.
  32.  
  33. Disconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve connector.
  34.  
  35. Remove the wire harness clamp.
  36.  
  37. Remove the union to check valve hose from the vacuum hose clamp.
  38.  
  39. Remove the 5 bolts, 2 nuts and intake manifold. Remove the gasket from the intake manifold.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect the knock sensor connector. Remove the nut and knock sensor.

To install:


NOTE
Make sure that the knock sensor is in the correct position.

  1. Install the knock control sensor with the nut and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

  3. Connect the knock control sensor connector.

  5. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  7. Inspect for fuel leak and check the function of throttle body.

  27. Remove the air cleaner cap sub-assembly.
  28.  
  29. Remove air cleaner case sub-assembly.
  30.  
  31. Remove the intake air surge tank.
  32.  
  33. Remove no. 1 air cleaner inlet.
  34.  
  35. Separate fuel tube sub-assembly.
  36.  
  37. Remove the intake manifold.
  38.  
  39. Disconnect the 2 knock control sensor connectors.
  40.  
  41. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 knock control sensors.

To install:

  1. Install the 2 knock control sensors with the 2 bolts as shown in the illustration and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

Testing



Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals. Resistance should be 120 to 280 kohm at 68°F (20°C). If the resistance is not as specified, replace the sensor.

Knock Sensor Strategy

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2009-2010

The Knock Sensor (KS) system uses one or two broadband one-wire sensors. The Knock Sensor generates an AC voltage signal of varying amplitude and frequency based on the engine vibration. The amplitude and frequency are dependent upon the level of knock that the KS detects. The control module receives the KS signal through a signal circuit, and the KS ground is supplied by the engine block through the sensor housing.
