Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install on engine stand.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil filler cap and gasket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the spark plugs and ignition coil assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the drain plug and gasket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ventilation valve.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 4 bolts and 4 camshaft position sensors.

  17. Remove the 4 bolts and 4 camshaft timing oil control valves.

  19. Remove the bolt and crankshaft position sensor.

  21. Remove the 2 oil pipe unions and oil pipe. Remove the LH oil control valve filter and gaskets.

  23. Remove the oil pipe bolt. Remove the 2 oil pipe unions and oil pipe. Remove the RH oil control valve filter and gaskets.

  25. Remove the cylinder block water drain cock sub-assembly, as follows:
    1. Remove the water drain cocks from the cylinder block.
    2.  
    3. Remove the water drain cock plugs from the water drain cocks.
    4.

  27. Remove the oil filter.
  28.  
  29. Remove the crankshaft pulley, as follows:
    1. Using SST (SST: 09213-70011, SST: 09330-00021) or equivalent, loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt.
    2.  
    3. Using SST (SST: 09950-50013) or equivalent, remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley.
    4.

  31. Remove the 6 bolts and the left hand No. 1 front engine mounting bracket. Using Torx® socket wrench E8, remove the 2 stud bolts.

  33. Remove the water inlet housing, as follows:
    1. Remove the 2 nuts, water inlet and thermostat.
    2.  
    3. Remove the gasket.
    4.  
    5. Remove the drain cock plug.
    6.  
    7. Remove the drain cock.
    8.  
    9. Remove the 2 stud bolts.
    10.  
    11. Remove the 2 bolts, nut, and water inlet housing.
    12.  
    13. Remove the 2 O-rings.
    14.

  35. Remove the water outlet, as follows:
    1. Remove the 2 bolts, 4 nuts and water outlet.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 2 gaskets and O-ring.
    4.

  37. Remove the 12 bolts, valve cover (for Bank 1) and gasket, then remove the 3 gaskets.
  38.  
  39. Remove the 12 bolts, valve cover (for Bank 2) and gasket, then remove the 3 gaskets.
  40.  
  41. Remove the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly.
  42.  
  43. Remove the oil strainer sub-assembly.
  44.  
  45. Remove the oil pan sub-assembly.
  46.  
  47. Remove the No. 1 oil pan baffle plate.
  48.  
  49. Remove the engine rear oil seal, as follows:
    1. Remove the 6 bolts.

    3. Using a screwdriver with the tip taped, pry out the oil seal retainer. Be careful not to damage the oil seal retainer.
      NOTE
      Be careful not to damage the engine rear oil seal retainer.


      NOTE
      Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

  51. Place the oil seal retainer on wooden blocks. Using a screwdriver and a hammer, tap out the oil seal.

  53. Remove the water pump assembly.
  54.  
  55. Remove the timing chain cover sub-assembly.
  56.  
  57. Remove timing chain case oil seal.
  58.  
  59. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression.
  60.  
  61. Remove the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly.
  62.  
  63. Remove the chain tensioner slipper.
  64.  
  65. Remove the chain sub-assembly.
  66.  
  67. Remove the idle sprocket assembly.
  68.  
  69. Remove the No. 1 chain vibration damper.
  70.  
  71. Remove crankshaft timing sprocket. Remove the 2 pulley set keys from the crankshaft.

  73. Remove camshaft timing gears and No. 2 chain (for Bank 1), as follows:
    1. While raising the No. 2 chain tensioner, insert a pin of 0.039 in (1.0 mm) into the hole to fix the No. 2 chain tensioner.
      NOTE
      Be careful not to damage the cylinder head with the wrench.


      NOTE
      Do not disassemble the camshaft timing gear assemblies.

    3. Hold the hexagonal portion of the camshaft with a wrench, and remove the 2 bolts and 2 camshaft timing gears.
    4.  
    5. Remove the No. 2 chain.

  75. Remove the bolt and No. 2 chain tensioner assembly.

  77. Remove camshaft bearing cap (for Bank 1), as follows:
    1. Check that the camshafts are positioned as shown in the illustration.

    3. Uniformly loosen and remove the 8 bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.

    5. Uniformly loosen and remove the 12 bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration. Uniformly loosen the bolts while keeping the camshaft level.

    7. Remove the 5 bearing caps.

  83. If necessary, remove the right hand camshaft housing sub-assembly by prying between the cylinder head and the camshaft housing with a screwdriver with the tip taped.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder head and the camshaft housing.

  85. Remove the camshaft timing gears and No. 2 chain (for Left-hand Bank), as follows:
    1. While pushing down the No. 3 chain tensioner, insert a pin of 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) into the hole to fix the No. 3 chain tensioner.

    3. Hold the hexagonal portion of the camshaft with a wrench, and remove the 2 bolts and 2 camshaft timing gears.
      NOTE
      Be careful not to damage the cylinder head with the wrench.


      NOTE
      Do not disassemble the camshaft timing gear assemblies.

    5. Remove the No. 2 chain.

  87. Remove the bolt and No. 3 chain tensioner.

  89. Remove the camshaft bearing cap (bank 2), as follows:
    1. Make sure that the knock pin of the camshaft is positioned as shown in the illustration.

    3. Uniformly loosen and remove the 8 bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.

    5. Uniformly loosen and remove the 13 bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration. Loosen the bolts while keeping the camshaft level.

    7. Remove the 5 camshaft bearing caps.

  95. If necessary, remove the left hand camshaft housing sub-assembly by prying between the cylinder head and the camshaft housing with a screwdriver with the tip taped.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder head and the camshaft housing.

  97. Remove the No. 1 valve rocker arm sub-assembly, as follows:
    1. Remove the 24 valve rocker arms.
      NOTE
      Arrange the removed parts in the correct order.

  99. Remove the valve lash adjuster assembly, as follows:
    1. Remove the 24 valve lash adjusters from the cylinder head.
      NOTE
      Arrange the removed parts in the correct order.

To install:


NOTE
Keep the lash adjuster free of dirt and foreign objects. Only use clean engine oil.

  1. Install the valve lash adjuster assembly, as follows:
    1. Place the lash adjuster into a container filled with engine oil. Insert the SST 09276-75010 tip into the lash adjuster's plunger and use the tip to press down on the check ball inside the plunger.

    3. Squeeze the SST and lash adjuster together to move the plunger up and down 5 to 6 times.
    4.  
    5. Check the movement of the plunger and bleed the air. Make sure the plunger moves up and down.
      NOTE
      When bleeding air from the high-pressure chamber, make sure that the tip of the SST is actually pressing the check ball as shown in the illustration. If the check ball is not pressed, air will not bleed.

    6.  
    7. After bleeding the air, remove the SST. Then, try to press the plunger quickly and firmly with a finger. Make sure the plunger is very difficult to move. If the result is not as specified, replace the lash adjuster.
      NOTE
      Install the lash adjuster to the same place it was removed from.

    8.  
    9. Install the lash adjusters.
    10.

  3. Install the No. 1 valve rocker arm sub-assembly, as follows:
    1. Apply engine oil to the lash adjuster tips and valve stem cap ends.
    2.  
    3. Make sure that the valve rocker arms are installed as shown in the illustration.

  5. Install the right hand camshaft bearing cap, as follows:
    1. Apply engine oil to the camshaft journals, camshaft housing and bearing caps.
    2.  
    3. Install the camshaft and No. 2 camshaft to the right camshaft housing.
    4.  
    5. Make sure of the marks and numbers on the camshaft bearing caps and place them in each proper position and direction.

    7. Temporarily tighten the 8 bearing cap bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm) in the order shown in the illustration.

  7. Install the right hand camshaft housing sub-assembly, as follows:
    1. Apply seal packing in a continuous line as shown in the illustration. Seal packing: Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent. Seal diameter: 3.5 to 4.5 mm (0.138 to 0.177 in.).
      NOTE
      Remove any oil from the contact surface. Install the camshaft housing sub-assembly within 3 minutes and tighten the bolts within 15 minutes after applying sealant. Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installing.

    3. Make sure that the knock pins of the camshafts are positioned as shown. Install the right hand camshaft housing and tighten the 12 bolts in the order shown in the illustration to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
      NOTE
      When installing the camshaft housing RH, it is necessary to correctly position the camshafts as shown in the illustration. Failure to correctly position these parts may result in damage due to contact between the pistons and valves. If a camshaft is rotated with a piston at TDC, valve contact will occur.


      NOTE
      If any of the bolts are loosened during installation, remove the camshaft housing, clean the installation surfaces, and reapply seal packing.


      NOTE
      If the camshaft housing is removed because any of the bolts are loosened during installation, make sure that the previously applied seal packing does not enter any oil passages.

    5. Tighten the 8 bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm) in the order shown in the illustration.

  9. Install the camshaft bearing cap (bank 2), as follows:
    1. Apply engine oil to the camshaft journals, camshaft housing and bearing caps.
    2.  
    3. Install the No. 3 camshaft and No. 4 camshaft to the left hand camshaft housing.
    4.  
    5. Make sure of the marks and numbers on the camshaft bearing caps and place them in each proper position and direction.

    7. Temporarily tighten the 8 bolts in the order shown in the illustration to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).

  11. Make sure that the valve rocker arm is installed.
  12.  
  13. Install the left camshaft housing sub-assembly, as follows:
    1. Apply seal packing in a continuous line as shown in the illustration. Seal packing: Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent. Seal diameter: 3.5 to 4.5 mm (0.138 to 0.177 in.).
      NOTE
      Remove any oil from the contact surface. Install the camshaft housing sub-assembly within 3 minutes and tighten the bolts within 15 minutes after applying sealant. Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installing.

    3. Make sure that the knock pins of the camshafts are positioned as shown. Install the left hand camshaft housing and tighten the 13 bolts in the order shown in the illustration to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
      NOTE
      When installing the camshaft housing LH, it is necessary to correctly position the camshafts as shown in the illustration. Failure to correctly position these parts may result in damage due to contact between the pistons and valves. If a camshaft is rotated with a piston at TDC, valve contact will occur.


      NOTE
      If any of the bolts are loosened during installation, remove the camshaft housing, clean the installation surfaces, and reapply seal packing.


      NOTE
      If the camshaft housing is removed because any of the bolts are loosened during installation, make sure that the previously applied seal packing does not enter any oil passages.

    5. Tighten the 8 bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm) in the order shown in the illustration.

  15. Install the No. 2 chain tensioner assembly with the bolt and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).

  17. While pushing in the tensioner, insert a pin of 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) diameter into the hole to hold it.

  19. Install the camshaft timing gears and No. 2 chain (for Right-hand Bank).
  20.  
  21. Install the No. 3 chain tensioner assembly with the bolt and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).

  23. While pushing in the tensioner, insert a pin of 1.0 mm (0.039 in.) diameter into the hole to hold it.
  24.  
  25. Install the camshaft timing gears and No. 2 chain (for Left-hand Bank).
  26.  
  27. Install the No 1 chain vibration damper with the 2 bolts and tighten to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the No 2 chain vibration damper.
  30.  
  31. Install the timing gear set keys and timing gear as shown in the illustration.
  32.  
  33. Install the idle sprocket assembly.
  34.  
  35. Install the chain sub-assembly.
  36.  
  37. Install the chain tensioner slipper.
  38.  
  39. Install the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly.
  40.  
  41. Install the water pump assembly.
  42.  
  43. Install the timing chain cover sub-assembly.
  44.  
  45. Install the water inlet housing.
  46.  
  47. Install the No. 1 left front engine mounting bracket, as follows:
    1. Install the No. 1 left front engine mounting bracket with the 6 bolts and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
      NOTE
      Install the water inlet and mounting bracket within 15 minutes after installing the chain cover. Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installation.

  49. Install the No. 1 oil pan baffle plate with the 7 bolts and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).

  51. Install the oil pan sub-assembly.
  52.  
  53. Install the oil strainer sub-assembly.

  55. Install the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly.
  56.  
  57. Install a new gasket and oil pan drain plug and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  58.  
  59. Install the cylinder head cover sub-assembly, as follows:
    1. Apply seal packing (Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent).
      NOTE
      Remove any oil from the contact surface. Install the crankcase within 3 minutes after applying seal packing. Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installation.

    2.  
    3. Install the gasket to the head cover.
    4.  
    5. Install the head cover with the 12 bolts. Tighten bolt A to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm), and other bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm). Be certain to tighten bolt 1.
    6.

  61. Install the left-hand cylinder head cover sub-assembly, as follows:
    1. Apply seal packing (Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent).
      NOTE
      Remove any oil from the contact surface. Install the crankcase within 3 minutes after applying seal packing. Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installation.

    2.  
    3. Install the gasket to the head cover.
    4.  
    5. Install the head cover with the 14 bolts. Tighten bolt A to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm), and other bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm). Be certain to tighten bolts 1 and 10.
    6.

  63. Install water outlet.
  64.  
  65. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  66.  
  67. Install the oil filter element.
  68.  
  69. Install the cylinder block water drain cock sub-assembly, as follows:
    1. Apply adhesive around the drain cocks. Adhesive: Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324, Three Bond 1324 or Equivalent.
    2.  
    3. Install the water drain cocks and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Do not rotate the drain cocks more than 1 revolution (360°) after tightening the drain cocks with the specified torque. Do not loosen after setting correctly.
    4.  
    5. Install the water drain cock plug to the water drain cocks and tighten to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
    6.

  71. Install the No. 1 oil pipe.

  73. Install the oil pipe.
  74.  
  75. Install the crankshaft position sensor with the bolt and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).

  77. Install the 4 camshaft timing oil control valves with the 4 bolts and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  78.  
  79. Install the 4 camshaft position sensors with the 4 bolts and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).

  81. Install the ventilation valve sub-assembly, as follows:
    1. Apply adhesive (Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324, Three Bond 1324 or equivalent) around the ventilation valve.
    2.  
    3. Install the ventilation valve and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
    4.

  83. Install the 6 spark plugs and the ignition coil assembly.
  84.  
  85. Install the oil filler cap sub-assembly.
  86.  
  87. Remove the engine stand.
  88.  
  89. Install the engine assembly.
  90.  

Camshaft Bearing Replacement

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2009-2010

To remove and replace the camshaft bearings, refer to the camshaft removal procedure.
