2.4L Engine

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

  1. Check the oil jet located above the timing chain sprocket for damage or clogging. If necessary, repair the cylinder block.
    NOTE
    If the valve does not fall smoothly, replace the relief valve. If necessary, replace the oil pump assembly.

  2.  
  3. Coat the relief valve with engine oil, and then check that the valve falls smoothly into the valve hole under its own weight.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pump rotor. Coat the drive rotor and driven rotor with engine oil.

  7. Place the drive and driven rotors into the oil pump with the marks facing the pump cover side.

  9. To check the side clearance, perform the following:


    1. Using a feeler gauge and precision straightedge, measure the clearance between the rotors and precision straightedge.
    2.  
    3. Standard clearance: 0.0012 to 0.0033 inches (0.030 to 0.085 mm ).
    4.  
    5. Maximum clearance: 0.0063 inches (0.16 mm).
    6.  
    7. If the side clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the oil pump assembly.

  11. To check the tip clearance, perform the following:


    1. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the drive and driven rotor tips.
    2.  
    3. Standard clearance: 0.0031 to 0.0063 inches (0.080 to 0.160 mm).
    4.  
    5. Maximum clearance: 0.0138 inches (0.35 mm).
    6.  
    7. If the tip clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the oil pump assembly.

  13. To check the body clearance, perform the following:


    1. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the driven rotor and pump body.
    2.  
    3. Standard clearance: 0.0039 to 0.0067 inches (0.100 to 0.170 mm).
    4.  
    5. Maximum clearance: .0128 inches. (0.325 mm).
    6.  
    7. If the body clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the oil pump assembly.
    8.

  15. Inspect the lower chain assembly and replace as necessary.
  16.  
  17. Inspect the oil pump drive sprocket and replace as necessary.
  18.  
  19. Inspect the chain tensioner plate and replace as necessary.

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2009-2010

    7. If the body clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the oil pump assembly.

  15. Inspect the lower chain assembly and replace as necessary.

  17. Inspect the oil pump drive sprocket and replace as necessary.

  19. Inspect the chain tensioner plate and replace as necessary.

3.5L Engine

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

  1. Inspect the oil pump relief valve, as follows:
    1. Coat the relief valve with engine oil and check that it falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight. If the valve does not fall smoothly, replace the relief valve. If necessary, replace the oil pump assembly.

  3. Inspect the oil pump rotor set, as follows:
    1. Install the rotors to the timing chain cover with the rotors' marks outward. Check that the rotors rotate smoothly.

    3. Check the tip clearance: using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the drive and driven rotor tips, as shown in the illustration. If the clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the drive and driven rotors. Standard: 0.0024 to 0.0063 inches (0.060 to 0.160 mm). Maximum: 0.0063 inches (0.16 mm).

    5. Check the side clearance: using a feeler gauge and precision straightedge, measure the clearance between the rotors and precision straightedge, as shown in the illustration. If the side clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the timing chain cover sub-assembly. Standard: 0.0012 to 0.0035 inches (0.030 to 0.090 mm). Maximum: 0.0035 inches (0.090 mm).

    7. Check the body clearance: using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the timing chain cover and driven rotor, as shown in the illustration. If the body clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the timing chain cover sub-assembly. Standard: 0.0098 to 0.0128 inches (0.250 to 0.325 mm). Maximum: 0.0128 inches (0.325 mm).

    5. Check the side clearance: using a feeler gauge and precision straightedge, measure the clearance between the rotors and precision straightedge, as shown in the illustration. If the side clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the timing chain cover sub-assembly. Standard: 0.0012 to 0.0035 inches (0.030 to 0.090 mm). Maximum: 0.0035 inches (0.090 mm).

    7. Check the body clearance: using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the timing chain cover and driven rotor, as shown in the illustration. If the body clearance is greater than the maximum, replace the timing chain cover sub-assembly. Standard: 0.0098 to 0.0128 inches (0.250 to 0.325 mm). Maximum: 0.0128 inches (0.325 mm).

Removal & Installation



2.4L (2AZ-FXE) Engine

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008


CAUTION
Before inspecting the high-voltage system or disconnecting the low voltage connector of the inverter with converter assembly, take safety precautions, such as wearing insulated gloves and removing the service plug grip to prevent electrical shocks. Make sure to turn the power switch off before removing the service plug grip. After removing the service plug grip, put it in your pocket to prevent other technicians from accidentally reconnecting it while you are working on the high-voltage system.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the or disconnect the following:


    1. Plastic engine cover and two nuts.
    2.  
    3. Front right wheel.
    4.  
    5. LH and RH engine under cover.
    6.  
    7. RH front fender apron seal.
    8.  
    9. Front exhaust pipe assembly.
    10.  
    11. RH engine mount stay.
    12.  
    13. Engine mount
    14.  
    15. RH engine mounting bracket
    16.  
    17. Drive belt.
    18.  
    19. Generator assembly.
    20.  
    21. Vane pump.
    22.  
    23. Ignition coil assembly.
    24.  
    25. Ventilation hoses.
    26.  
    27. Valve cover.
    28.  

  8.  
  9. Turn the crankshaft pulley until its groove and the timing mark "0" of the timing chain cover are aligned.
  10.  
  11. Check that each timing mark of the camshaft timing gear and sprocket is aligned with each timing mark located on the intake and exhaust bearing caps. If not, turn the crankshaft by 1 revolution (360°) to align the timing marks.
  12.  
  13. Remove the or disconnect the following:


    1. Crankshaft pulley.
    2.  
    3. Crankshaft position sensor.
    4.  
    5. Oil pan.
    6.  
    7. Chain upper tensioner assembly.
    8.  

  14.  
  15. Install the No. 1 engine hanger (12281-28010) and No. 2 engine hanger (12282-28010) with the bolts (91512-61020) and tighten to: 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Remove the or disconnect the following:


    1. Drive belt tensioner.
    2.  
    3. Engine mount insulator.
    4.  
    5. RH engine mount bracket.
    6.  
    7. Using a E10 Torx® socket, remove the stud bolt for the drive belt tensioner from the cylinder block.
    8.  
    9. Timing chain cover twelve bolts and two nuts.
      NOTE
      Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the timing chain cover, cylinder block and cylinder head. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

    10.  
    11. Timing chain cover by prying between the timing chain cover and cylinder head or cylinder block with a screwdriver.
      NOTE
      Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

    12.  
    13. Using a screwdriver and a hammer, tap out the timing chain case oil seal.
    14.  
    15. Crankshaft position sensor plate.
    16.  
    17. Chain tensioner slipper.
    18.  
    19. Chain vibration damper.
    20.  
    21. Timing chain guide.
    22.  
    23. Upper chain assembly.

  1. Install a new gasket and the oil pump with the 3 bolts. Tighten the bolts 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).

  9. Turn the crankshaft pulley until its groove and the timing mark "0" of the timing chain cover are aligned.

  11. Check that each timing mark of the camshaft timing gear and sprocket is aligned with each timing mark located on the intake and exhaust bearing caps. If not, turn the crankshaft by 1 revolution (360°) to align the timing marks.
  12.  
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Crankshaft position sensor
     
    Oil pan
     
    Chain upper tensioner assembly

  15. Install the No. 1 engine hanger (12281-28010) and No. 2 engine hanger (12282-28010) with the bolts (91512-61020) and tighten to: 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2010

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the engine assembly with transaxle.
  4.  
  5. Secure engine.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine wire.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front frame assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the starter assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the automatic transaxle assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil level gauge guide sub-assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the right and left exhaust manifold sub-assemblies.
  18.  
  19. Remove the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove the No. 2 idler pulley sub-assembly.
  22.  
  23. Remove the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the water pump pulley.
  26.  
  27. Remove the water inlet housing.
  28.  
  29. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  30.  
  31. Remove the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly.
  32.  
  33. Remove the oil strainer sub-assembly.
  34.  
  35. Remove the oil pan sub-assembly.
  36.  
  37. Remove the intake air surge tank assembly.
  38.  
  39. Remove the ignition coil assembly.
  40.  
  41. Remove the No. 1 and 2 oil pipes.
  42.  
  43. Remove the right and left cylinder head cover sub-assemblies.
  44.  
  45. Remove the timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly.
  46.  
  47. Remove the timing gear case or timing chain case oil seal, as follows:
    1. Using a screwdriver with the tip taped, pry out the oil seal.
    2.

To install:

  1. Install timing gear case or timing chain case oil seal, as follows:
    1. Using SST (SST: 09316-60011) or equivalent tool, tap in a new oil seal until its surface is flush with the timing chain case edge.
      NOTE
      Keep the lip free from foreign matter.


      NOTE
      Do not tap on the oil seal at an angle.


      NOTE
      Make sure that the oil seal edge does not stick out of the timing chain case.

    3. Apply MP grease to the oil seal lip.
    4.

  3. Install timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the right and left cylinder head cover sub-assemblies.
  6.  
  7. Install the No. 1 and 2 oil pipes.
  8.  
  9. Install the ignition coil assembly.
  10.  
  11. Install the intake air surge tank assembly.
  12.  
  13. Install the oil pan sub-assembly.
  14.  
  15. Install the oil strainer sub-assembly.
  16.  
  17. Install the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly.
  18.  
  19. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  20.  
  21. Install the water inlet housing.
  22.  
  23. Install the water pump pulley.
  24.  
  25. Install the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly.
  26.  
  27. Install the No. 2 idler pulley sub-assembly.
