Removal & Installation



2.4L Engine

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2009-2010

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. For A/T vehicles, separate the transaxle. Refer to the Drive Train section.
  6.  
  7. For M/T vehicles, separate the transaxle. Refer to the Drive Train section.
  8.  
  9. For A/T vehicles, remove the flexplate. Refer to Flexplate and Flywheel above.
  10.  
  11. For M/T vehicles, remove the flywheel. Refer to Flexplate and Flywheel above.
  12.  
  13. Using a knife, cut through the oil seal lip.
  14.  
  15. Using a screwdriver with its tip taped, pry out the oil seal.
  16.  
  17. After the removal, check the crankshaft for damage. If it is damaged, smooth the surface with 400-grit sandpaper.

To install:


NOTE
Keep the lip free from foreign matter.

  1. Apply MP grease to a new oil seal lip.
  2.  
  3. Using Special Tools: 09223-15030, 09950-70010 and a hammer, tap in the oil seal until its surface is flush with the rear oil seal retainer edge. Wipe off extra grease from the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. To complete installation, reverse remaining removal procedure.

Hybrid

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008


CAUTION
Before inspecting the high-voltage system or disconnecting the low voltage connector of the inverter with converter assembly, take safety precautions, such as wearing insulated gloves and removing the service plug grip to prevent electrical shocks. Make sure to turn the power switch off before removing the service plug grip. After removing the service plug grip, put it in your pocket to prevent other technicians from accidentally reconnecting it while you are working on the high-voltage system.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. For A/T vehicles, separate the transaxle. Refer to the Drive Train section.
  6.  
  7. For M/T vehicles, separate the transaxle. Refer to the Drive Train section.
  8.  
  9. For A/T vehicles, remove the flexplate. Refer to Flexplate and Flywheel above.
  10.  
  11. For M/T vehicles, remove the flywheel. Refer to Flexplate and Flywheel above.
  12.  
  13. Using a knife, cut through the oil seal lip.
  14.  
  15. Using a screwdriver with its tip taped, pry out the oil seal.

  17. After the removal, check the crankshaft for damage. If it is damaged, smooth the surface with 400-grit sandpaper.

  3. Remove the automatic transaxle assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear main seal, as follows:
    1. Using a knife, cut off the oil seal lip.

To install:

  1. Apply MP grease to a new oil seal lip.

  3. Using SST (SST: 09223-15030, SST: 09950-70010) or equivalent and a hammer, tap in the oil seal. Oil seal tap in depth: -0.020 to 0.020 in. (-0.5 to 0.5 mm)
  4.  
  5. Install the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install automatic transaxle assembly.
  8.  

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2009-2010

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the automatic transaxle assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear main seal, as follows:
    1. Using a knife, cut off the oil seal lip.

To install:

  1. Apply MP grease to a new oil seal lip.

  3. Using SST (SST: 09223-15030, SST: 09950-70010) or equivalent and a hammer, tap in the oil seal. Oil seal tap in depth: -0.020 to 0.020 in. (-0.5 to 0.5 mm)
  4.  
  5. Install the drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install automatic transaxle assembly.
  8.
