Diagnosis & Testing

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

  1. Check the radio's automatic station search function.
  2.
  3. Check the radio's automatic station search function by activating it. Go to the next step.
  4.
  5. If the radio's automatic station search function works properly, replace the radio receiver.
  6.
  7. If the radio's automatic station search does not function properly, inspect the radio receiver by performing the following:

Fig. Identifying radio antenna receiver connector

    1. Disconnect the radio receiver connector.
    2.
    3. Measure the voltage according to these value(s):

      Tester connection: Antenna body ground.

Condition: Ignition switch on (ignition) and radio switch on.

      Specified condition: 10-14 Volts.

    4.

  8.
  9. If the voltage values do not match, replace radio receiver. If the voltage values match, go to the next step.
  10.
  11. Check the optional components, (sun-shade film, telephone antenna, etc.) that may decrease reception capacity, are installed.
  12.
  13. If the optional components are installed correctly, remove optional components and check again. If the optional components are not installed correctly, go to the next step.
  14.
  15. Check the radio receiver by performing the following:

    1. Remove the antenna plug from the radio receiver.
    2.
    3. Check for noise.
    4.
    5. Turn the ignition switch on (ACC) with the radio receiver connector connected.
    6.
    7. Turn the radio on and put into AM mode.
    8.
    9. Place a screwdriver, thin wire or other metal object on the radio receiver's antenna jack and check that noise can be heard from the speaker.
    10.

  16.
  17. If a noise is not heard from the speaker, replace the radio receiver. If a noise is heard from the speaker, go to the next step.
  18.
  19. Check the glass antenna by performing the following:
    NOTE
When cleaning the glass, wipe it in the direction of the wire with a soft dry cloth. Take care not to damage the wire. Do not use detergents or glass cleaners with abrasive ingredients. When measuring voltage, wrap a piece of tin foil around the tip of the negative probe and press the foil against the wire with your finger, as shown in the illustration.

Fig. Checking continuity of the antenna

Check for continuity of the antenna at the center of each antenna wire.

  20.
  21. If there is no continuity, repair the glass antenna. If there is continuity, go to the next step.
  22.
  23. Check the antenna cord by performing the following:

    1. Remove the antenna plug of the radio receiver and antenna.
    2.
    3. Measure the resistance between the antenna and radio receiver to check for an open circuit in the antenna cord. Standard resistance is below 1 ohm.
    4.
    5. Measure the resistance between the antenna cord and body ground to check for a short circuit in the antenna cord. Standard resistance is 10 kilo-ohms or higher.
    6.

  24.
  25. If the resistance is not higher, replace the antenna cord. If the resistance is ok, go to the next step.
  26.
  27. Replace the amplifier antenna and check if radio broadcasts can be received normally. If radio broadcasts can be received, antenna is operating normally. If radio broadcasts cannot be received, replace the radio receiver.
  28.
