2.4L Engine

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2009-2010

  1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner inlet assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner cap sub assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air cleaner case sub assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the starter assembly (manual transaxle).
    1. Disconnect the terminal 50 connector from the starter assembly.

    3. Remove the nut and disconnect the wire harness from terminal 30.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 3 bolts, clutch flexible hose bracket and starter assembly.

  11. Remove the starter assembly (automatic transaxle).
    1. Disconnect the terminal 50 connector from the starter assembly.

    3. Remove the nut and disconnect the wire harness from terminal 30.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 2 bolts and starter assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the starter assembly (manual transaxle).
    1. Install the starter assembly and clutch flexible hose bracket with the 3 bolts. Tighten bolt A to 28 ft. lbs. (37 Nm). Tighten bolt B to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).

    3. Connect the wire harness to terminal 30 and install the nut. Then, attach the terminal cap. Tighten to 87 inch lbs. (9.8 Nm).

    5. Connect the terminal 50 connector to the starter assembly.

  3. Install the starter assembly (automatic transaxle).
    1. Install the starter assembly with the 2 bolts. Tighten to 28 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).

    3. Connect the wire harness to terminal 30 and install the nut. Then, attach the terminal cap. Tighten to 87 inch lbs. (9.8 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Connect the terminal 50 connector to the starter assembly.
    6.

  5. Install the air cleaner case sub assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the air cleaner cap sub assembly.
  8.  
  9. Install the air cleaner inlet assembly.
  10.  
  11. Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal.
  12.  

3.5L Engine

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2009-2010

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove cool air intake duct seal.
  6.  
  7. Remove v-bank cover sub-assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove air cleaner inlet assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove air cleaner cap sub-assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove air cleaner case sub-assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove No. 1 air cleaner inlet.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the terminal 50 connector from the starter assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the nut and disconnect the wire harness from terminal 30.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 2 bolts and starter assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the starter assembly with the 2 bolts and tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the wire harness to terminal 30 and install the nut and tighten to 87 inch lbs. (9.8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Cover the nut with the cap.
  6.  
  7. Connect terminal 50 to the starter assembly.
  8.  
  9. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

3.5L Engines

Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove cool air intake duct seal.
  6.  
  7. Remove v-bank cover sub-assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove air cleaner inlet assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove air cleaner cap sub-assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove air cleaner case sub-assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove No. 1 air cleaner inlet.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the terminal 50 connector from the starter assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the nut and disconnect the wire harness from terminal 30.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 2 bolts and starter assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the starter assembly with the 2 bolts and tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the wire harness to terminal 30 and install the nut and tighten to 87 inch lbs. (9.8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Cover the nut with the cap.
  6.  
  7. Connect terminal 50 to the starter assembly.
  8.  
  9. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
  10.  

Testing



Specific to:

Toyota Camry 2007-2008


WARNING
Make sure to complete each of the following tests within 3 to 5 seconds to prevent the coil from burning out.

  1. Perform the pull-in test:
    1. Disconnect the lead wire from terminal C.
    2.  
    3. Connect the battery to the magnetic switch as shown in the illustration. Check that the clutch pinion gear moves outward. If the clutch pinion gear does not move outward, replace the magnetic switch assembly.

  3. Perform the hold-in test:
    1. Disconnect the negative (-) terminal lead from terminal C under the conditions for pull-in test. Check that the pinion gear remains out. If the clutch pinion gear moves inward, replace the repair service starter kit.

  5. Inspect clutch pinion gear return:
    1. Disconnect the negative (-) lead from the starter body. Check that the clutch pinion gear moves inward. If the clutch pinion gear does not move inward, replace the magnetic switch assembly.

  7. Perform no-load performance test:
    1. Connect the field coil wire to terminal C with the nut. Make sure that the lead is not grounded.
    2.  
    3. Clamp the starter in a vise.
    4.  
    5. Connect the battery and an ammeter to the starter shown in the illustration.
    6.  
    7. Check that the starter rotates smoothly and steadily with the clutch pinion gear extended. Check that the ammeter reads the specified current of 11.5 volts at 90 amps or less.
