Crankshaft Damper (Balancer)

Removal & Installation



  1. Remove the drive belt.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the service slot plug in the bellhousing.
  6.  
  7. Install the flywheel locking tool EN-46547 into the flywheel teeth.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt. Discard the bolt.
  12.  
  13. Use a 3 jaw puller to remove the crankshaft balancer.
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft balancer friction washer. This will be located at the end of the crankshaft balancer or on the crankshaft.
  16.  
  17. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the crankshaft balancer friction washer to the end of the crankshaft balancer.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft balancer using the installation tool J-41478.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tool.
  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft balancer washer and NEW bolt and tighten to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm). Tighten the bolt an additional 180 degrees.
  8.  
  9. Raise and support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the flywheel locking tool.
  12.  
  13. Install the service slot plug.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Install the drive belt.
  18.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cooling fan.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6.  
  7. Raise and support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the service slot plug in the bellhousing.
  10.  
  11. Install the flywheel locking tool EN-46547 into the flywheel teeth.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt. Discard the bolt.
  16.  
  17. Use a 3 jaw puller to remove the crankshaft balancer.
  18.  
  19. Remove the crankshaft balancer friction washer. This will be located at the end of the crankshaft balancer or on the crankshaft.
  20.  
  21. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer.
  22.  

To install:


CAUTION
The crankshaft balancer does not have a key-way; so the crankshaft could turn when tightening, causing an improper torque.

  1. Install the crankshaft balancer friction washer to the end of the crankshaft balancer.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankshaft balancer using the installation tool J-41478.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tool.
  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft balancer washer and NEW bolt and tighten to 111 ft. lbs. (150 Nm). Tighten the bolt an additional 180 degrees.
  8.  
  9. Raise and support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the flywheel locking tool.
  12.  
  13. Install the service slot plug.
  14.  
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Install the drive belt.
  18.  
  19. Install cooling fan.
  20.
