Oil Pan

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Oil dipstick tube
     
    Engine splash guard
     
    Right front halfshaft, if equipped with 3.5L Engine
     
    Power steering gear, if equipped with RWD
     

  6.  
  7. If equipped with 4WD:
    1. Remove the front driveshaft.
    2.  
    3. Remove the differential carrier assembly bushing to frame bolts only.
    4.  
    5. Pull the differential carrier assembly downward.
    6.  
    7. Secure the pinion yoke to prevent the differential carrier from rotating.
    8.  

  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Service slot plug
     
    Fuel pipe bracket at transmission and position aside
     
    Four lower transmission mounting bolts attached to oil pan
     

  10.  
  11. If equipped with 4WD, remove the power steering gear mounting bolts only and pull gear down far enough to access oil pan.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the engine wiring harness retainers from oil pan
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil pan mounting bolts.
  16.  
  17. Install 2 bolts in the threaded holes at the rear of the oil pan to act as jack screws. Tighten evenly to release the oil pan from the engine block.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil pan and 2 bolts from the jack screw holes.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Apply a bead of sealant around the oil pan as shown.
    NOTE
    Install the oil pan within 10 minutes of applying the sealant.

  3. Install the oil pan, making sure that the pan if positioned fully rearward against the transmission mounting surface.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan bolts and tighten the side bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Tighten the end bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the engine wiring harness retainers to oil pan.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with 4WD, position the steering gear upward to the frame assembly and install the steering gear mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Install the four lower transmission mounting bolts and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the nuts securing the fuel pipe bracket at transmission and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the service slot plug.
  16.  
  17. Right front halfshaft, if equipped with 3.5L Engine
  18.  
  19. If equipped with RWD, install the power steering gear.
  20.  
  21. If equipped with 4WD:
    1. Position the differential carrier assembly to the frame.
    2.  
    3. Install the differential carrier assembly bushing to frame bolts. Tighten to 112 ft. lbs. (152 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the front driveshaft.
    6.

  23. Install the engine splash shield.
  24.  
  25. Install the oil dipstick tube. Tighten the bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Fill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  28.  
  29. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  30.

  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine splash guard
     
    Right front halfshaft, if equipped with 3.5L or 3.7L Engines
     
    Power steering gear, if equipped with RWD

  7. If equipped with 4WD:
    1. Remove the front driveshaft.
    2.  
    3. Remove the differential carrier assembly bushing to frame bolts only.
    4.  
    5. Pull the differential carrier assembly downward.
    6.  
    7. Secure the pinion yoke to prevent the differential carrier from rotating.
    8.

  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Service slot plug
     
    Fuel pipe bracket at transmission and position aside
     
    Four lower transmission mounting bolts attached to oil pan
     

  10.  
  11. If equipped with 4WD, remove the power steering gear mounting bolts only and pull gear down far enough to access oil pan.
  12.  
  13. Pull the power steering gear downward in order to gain access to the oil pan.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the engine wiring harness retainers from oil pan
  16.  
  17. Remove the oil pan mounting bolts.
  18.  
  19. Install 2 bolts in the threaded holes at the rear of the oil pan to act as jack screws. Tighten evenly to release the oil pan from the engine block.
  20.  
  21. Remove the oil pan and 2 bolts from the jack screw holes.
  22.  
  23. Clean and inspect the engine block sealing surface.
  24.  

To install:

  11. Install the four lower transmission mounting bolts and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

  13. Install the nuts securing the fuel pipe bracket at transmission and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the service slot plug.
  16.  
  17. Right front halfshaft, if equipped with 3.5L Engine
  18.  
  19. If equipped with RWD, install the power steering gear.
  20.  
  21. If equipped with 4WD:
    1. Position the differential carrier assembly to the frame.
    2.  
    3. Install the differential carrier assembly bushing to frame bolts. Tighten to 112 ft. lbs. (152 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the front driveshaft.
    6.  

  22.  
  23. Install the engine splash shield.
  24.  
  25. Install the oil dipstick tube. Tighten the bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Fill the engine with oil to the correct level.
  28.  
  29. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  30.
