Inspection



  1. Clean all parts of sludge, oil, and varnish by soaking in carburetor cleaner or cleaning solvent.
  2.  
  3. Inspect for foreign material and determine the source of the foreign material.
  4.  
  5. Inspect the oil pump housing and engine front cover for scoring, damaged threads, cracks or casting imperfections.
  6.  
  7. Do not attempt to repair the oil pump housing. Replace the oil pump housing if damage is found.
  8.  
  9. Inspect the oil pump gears for damage.
  10.  
  11. Measure the inner oil pump gear tip clearance in several places.
  12.  
  13. Measure the outer oil pump gear tip clearance in several places.
  14.  
  15. Measure the oil pump gear side clearance.
  16.  
  17. Inspect the pressure regulator valve for scoring, sticking or burrs.
  18.  
  19. Inspect the pressure regulator valve spring for loss of tension or bending. Replace the pressure regulator spring if damaged.
  20.  
  21. Inspect the oil pump pipe pickup tube and screen assembly for looseness, broken screen and o-ring damage.
  22.  

Overhaul

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine front cover
     
    Oil pump cover bolts
     
    Oil pump cover
     

  4.  
  5. Matchmark the inner and outer gears in relation to the oil pump housing.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Inner and outer oil pump gears
     
    Oil pump pressure relief valve plug
     
    Oil pump pressure relief valve and spring

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump pressure relief valve and spring
     
    Oil pump pressure relief valve plug and tighten to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm)
     
    Oil pump outer and inner gears
     
    Oil pump cover and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Engine front cover
     

  2.  
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Engine front cover
     
    Oil pump cover bolts
     
    Oil pump cover
     

  4.  
  5. Matchmark the inner and outer gears in relation to the oil pump housing.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Inner and outer oil pump gears
     
    Oil pump pressure relief valve plug
     
    Oil pump pressure relief valve and spring

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Oil pump pressure relief valve and spring
     
    Oil pump pressure relief valve plug and tighten to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm)
     
    Oil pump outer and inner gears
     
    Oil pump cover and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
     
    Engine front cover
     

  2.  
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  4.  

5.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine front cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pump screen bolt and nuts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pump screen with O-ring seal.
  10.  
  11. Remove the O-ring seal from the pump screen.
  12.  
  13. Discard the O-ring seal.
  14.  
  15. Remove the remaining crankshaft oil deflector nuts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the crankshaft oil deflector.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil pump bolts.
    NOTE
    Do not allow dirt or debris to enter the oil pump assembly, cap end as necessary.

  20.  
  21. Remove the oil pump.
  22.  
  23. Clean and inspect the oil pump.

To install:

  1. Align the splined surfaces of the crankshaft sprocket and the oil pump drive gear and install the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump onto the crankshaft sprocket until the pump housing contacts the face of the engine block.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pump bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the crankshaft oil deflector and nuts until snug.
  8.  
  9. Lubricate a NEW oil pump screen O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
  10.  
  11. Install the NEW O-ring seal onto the oil pump screen.
    NOTE
    Push the oil pump screen tube completely into the oil pump prior to tightening the bolt. Do not allow the bolt to pull the tube into the pump.

  12.  
  13. Align the oil pump screen mounting brackets with the correct crankshaft bearing cap studs.
  14.  
  15. Install the oil pump screen.
  16.  
  17. Install the oil pump screen bolt and nuts. Tighten the bolt to 12 Nm (106 lb in). Tighten the nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the engine front cover.
  20.  
  21. Install the oil pan.
  22.
