Lower Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Measure and record the distance from the bushing flange to the bracket.
  6.  
  7. Install tool J 41805on the rear bushing and tighten until the bushing is removed.

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the rear bushing into the control arm
  2.  
  3. Install tools J 41805. Tighten until the bushing is fully seated.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower control arm.
  6.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Measure and record the distance from the bushing flange to the bracket.
  6.  
  7. Install tool J 41805on the rear bushing and tighten until the bushing is removed.

To install:

  1. Install the rear bushing into the control arm
  2.  
  3. Install tools J 41805. Tighten until the bushing is fully seated.
  4.  
  5. Install the lower control arm.
  6.  

Removal & Installation



2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Place a jack stand under the lower control arm to support it at ride height.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness bracket retaining bolt and nut, if equipped
     
    Brake hose from upper arm
     
    Upper ball joint nut
     
    Upper arm from steering knuckle
     
    Mounting bolts
     
    Upper control arm

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm and tighten the bolts to 118 ft. lbs. (160 Nm).
     
    Steering knuckle to upper control arm ball joint
     
    New ball joint stud nut and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     
    Brake hose to upper arm
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness bracket retaining bolt and nut, if equipped
     
    Wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the front wheel alignment.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The 2WD vehicle lower control arm bolts are equipped with cams, which are rotated to achieve caster and camber adjustments. In order to preserve adjustment and ease installation, matchmark the cams to the control arm before removal. If the control arm is being replaced, transfer the alignment marks to the new component before installation.



    Front wheel
     
    Stabilizer bar links from control arm
     
    Lower shock nut and through bolt
     
    Lower ball joint stud from steering knuckle
     



    Adjustment cam nuts and cams
     
    Lower control arm bolts and control arm

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    The nuts must be tightened in sequence.



    Lower control arm. Tighten the rear nuts first, then the front nuts to 114 ft. lbs. (155 Nm).
     
    Lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle
     
    Ball joint-to-steering knuckle nut and tighten to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm).
     
    Lower shock nut and through bolt and tighten
     
    Stabilizer bar links
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the front wheel alignment.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The 2WD vehicle lower control arm bolts are equipped with cams, which are rotated to achieve caster and camber adjustments. In order to preserve adjustment and ease installation, matchmark the cams to the control arm before removal. If the control arm is being replaced, transfer the alignment marks to the new component before installation.



    Front wheel
     
    Stabilizer bar links from control arm
     
    Lower shock nut and through bolt
     
    Lower ball joint stud from steering knuckle
     



    Adjustment cam nuts and cams
     
    Lower control arm bolts and control arm

  4.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE
    The nuts must be tightened in sequence.



    Lower control arm. Tighten the rear nuts first, then the front nuts to 114 ft. lbs. (155 Nm).
     
    Lower ball joint stud into the steering knuckle
     
    Ball joint-to-steering knuckle nut and tighten to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm).
     
    Lower shock nut and through bolt and tighten
     
    Stabilizer bar links
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the front wheel alignment.
  4.  

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Place a jack stand under the lower control arm to support it at ride height.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    The 4WD vehicle upper control arm bolts are equipped with cams, which are rotated to achieve caster and camber adjustments. In order to preserve adjustment and ease installation, matchmark the cams to the control arm before removal. If the control arm is being replaced, transfer the alignment marks to the new component before installation.



    Wheel
     
    Wheel speed sensor brackets
     
    Brake hose from upper arm
     
    Upper arm from ball joint stud nuts
     



    Nuts and adjustments cams

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper arm and mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 114 ft. lbs. (155 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Align the cams to the reference marks made earlier, then tighten the cam nuts to 114 ft. lbs. (155 Nm).

    Ball joint stud nuts and tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     
    Brake hose to upper arm
     
    Wheel speed sensor brackets
     
    Wheel
     

  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Steering knuckle
     
    Stabilizer bar links from the control arm
     
    Lower shock bolt and nut
     
    Torsion bar, if necessary
     
    Lower control arm

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the control arm, bolts and nuts. Install the washer on the front bolt with the shoulder facing the control arm.
    NOTE
    The nuts must be tightened in sequence.

  2.  
  3. Tighten the rear nut first to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm), then tighten the front nut to 122 ft. lbs. (165 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Steering knuckle
     
    Torsion bar, if removed
     
    Lower shock bolt and nut
     
    Stabilizer bar links
     
    Front wheels
     

  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the front end alignment, as necessary.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Steering knuckle
     
    Stabilizer bar links from the control arm
     
    Lower shock bolt and nut
     
    Torsion bar, if necessary
     
    Lower control arm

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the control arm, bolts and nuts. Install the washer on the front bolt with the shoulder facing the control arm.
    NOTE
    The nuts must be tightened in sequence.

  2.  
  3. Tighten the rear nut first to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm), then tighten the front nut to 122 ft. lbs. (165 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Steering knuckle
     
    Torsion bar, if removed
     
    Lower shock bolt and nut
     
    Stabilizer bar links
     
    Front wheels
     

  6.  
  7. Check and adjust the front end alignment, as necessary.
