Removal & Installation


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  3. Position a fluid catch pan under the power steering gear.
  5. Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
  7. Turn the ignition key to the LOCK position and remove the key.
  9. Insert Steering Column Locking Pin J-42640 into the access hole in the lower steering column trim cover.
  11. Raise and support the vehicle.
  13. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
    Engine skid plate, if equipped
    Front axle housing, if equipped
    Outer tie rod ends from steering knuckle
    Feed and return fluid hoses from the steering gear. Immediately cap or plug all openings to prevent system contamination or excessive fluid loss.
    Intermediate shaft-to-lower steering column shaft pinch bolt
    Lower shaft-to-steering gear pinch bolt
    Power steering gear-to-frame bolts and washers
    Front crossmember, if equipped with RWD only
    Power steering gear

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering gear to the vehicle. Loosely install the mounting nuts, washers and bolts.
    Crossmember, if equipped with RWD only. Tighten the mounting bolts to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm).
    Steering gear mounting bolts. Tighten the vertical bolts to 96 ft. lbs. (130 Nm) and the horizontal bolts to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
    Lower shaft-to-steering gear pinch bolt and tighten the bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
    Intermediate shaft-to-lower shaft pinch bolt, making sure the matchmarks line up. Tighten the bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
    Pressure and return hoses to the power steering gear. Tighten the hoses to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
    Outer tie rod ends
    Front axle housing, if equipped
    Engine undercover
    Front wheels

  3. Remove the steering column lock pin
  5. Bleed the power steering system
