Removal & Installation

  1. Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  2.  
  3. Disable the air bag system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  4.  
  5. Lock the steering column through the access hole in the lower steering column trim cover using steering wheel lock J-42640.
  6.  
  7. Locate the access holes positioned on both sides of the steering wheel shroud.
  8.  
  9. Using a blunt-ended tool, push the leaf spring fasteners inward through the access holes.
  10.  
  11. Lift and partially remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module from the steering wheel in order to expose the electrical connectors.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the horn electrical connector 
  16.  
  17. Remove the inflatable restraint module from the steering wheel.
  18.  
  19. Make an alignment mark in order to note the relationship of the steering wheel to the steering shaft.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the steering wheel nut 2 complete revolutions.
  22.  
  23. Carefully unseat the steering wheel from the steering column.
  24.  
  25. Remove the steering wheel nut.
  26.  
  27. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column.
  28.  

To install:

  1. If installing a replacement steering wheel perform the following:
    1. Ensure the front wheels are set in the straight-ahead position.
    2.  
    3. Position the steering wheel near the steering shaft with the arrow at 12 o'clock.
    4.  
    5. Ensure that proper tooth alignment to the steering wheel and the steering shaft has been achieved.

  3. If installing the original steering wheel perform the following:
    1. Position the steering wheel to the steering column.
    2.  
    3. Align the marks made during the removal of the steering wheel.
    4.

  5. Push the steering wheel onto the steering shaft.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering wheel nut to the steering shaft and tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Unlock the steering column by removing the locking tool from the lower trim cover access hole.
  10.  
  11. Position the inflatable restraint module to the steering wheel.
  12.  
  13. Connect the electrical connectors to the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
  14.  
  15. Connect the horn electrical connector.
  16.  
  17. Position the 4 alignment posts of the inflatable restraint module to the holes that are located on the steering wheel housing.
  18.  
  19. Push the inflatable restraint module into the steering wheel to engage and latch the leaf spring fasteners.
  20.  
  21. After installation, pull up on the sides of the inflatable restraint module to ensure the leaf spring fasteners are engaged.

  23. Enable the air bag system.
  24.  

  1. Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  2.  
  3. Disable the air bag system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  4.  
  5. Lock the steering column through the access hole in the lower steering column trim cover using steering wheel lock J-42640.
  6.  
  7. Locate the access holes positioned on both sides of the steering wheel shroud.
  8.  
  9. Using a blunt-ended tool, push the leaf spring fasteners inward through the access holes.
  10.  
  11. Lift and partially remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module from the steering wheel in order to expose the electrical connectors.

  13. Disconnect the electrical connectors.

  15. Disconnect the horn electrical connector 
  16.  
  17. Remove the inflatable restraint module from the steering wheel.
  18.

To install:

  7. Install the steering wheel nut to the steering shaft and tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).

  9. Unlock the steering column by removing the locking tool from the lower trim cover access hole.
  10.  
  11. Position the inflatable restraint module to the steering wheel.
  12.  
  13. Connect the electrical connectors to the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
  14.  
  15. Connect the horn electrical connector.
  16.  
  17. Position the 4 alignment posts of the inflatable restraint module to the holes that are located on the steering wheel housing.
  18.  
  19. Push the inflatable restraint module into the steering wheel to engage and latch the leaf spring fasteners.
  20.  
  21. After installation, pull up on the sides of the inflatable restraint module to ensure the leaf spring fasteners are engaged.
  22.  
  23. Enable the air bag system.
  24.
