Knuckles

Removal & Installation



2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Place a jack stand under the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Wheel hub/bearing assembly
     
    Outer tie rod end
     
    Upper and lower ball joint nuts and discard
     
    Separate the ball joints from the steering knuckle
     
    Steering knuckle
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean the ball joints and tie rod ends. Inspect the tapered holes and mounting surfaces of the steering knuckle for damage or being out of round. Replace the knuckle if the holes are damaged.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering knuckle and connect the lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the upper ball joint to the knuckle and tighten the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Outer tie rod end
     
    Wheel hub/bearing assembly
     
    Wheel
     

  8.  
  9. Check the front wheel alignment.
  10.  

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Place a jack stand under the lower control arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel
     
    Wheel hub nut and discard
     
    Brake caliper bracket
     
    Speed sensor harness from chassis harness and fender panel
     
    Outer tie rod end from steering knuckle
     
    Upper ball joint stud nuts
     
    Lower ball joint nut
     
    Separate ball joint from knuckle
     
    Steering knuckle
     

  8.  
  9. If the knuckle is being replaced, remove the wheel hub/bearing assembly.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Clean the ball joints and tie rod ends. Inspect the tapered holes and mounting surfaces of the steering knuckle for damage or being out of round. Replace the knuckle if the holes are damaged.
  2.  
  3. If removed, install the wheel hub/bearing assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering knuckle and connect the lower ball joint. Tighten the nut to 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the upper ball joint to the knuckle and tighten the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Outer tie rod end
     
    Speed sensor harness to chassis harness and fender panel
     
    Brake caliper bracket
     
    New wheel hub nut and tighten to 191 ft. lbs. (260 Nm).
     
    Wheel
     

  10.  
  11. Check the front wheel alignment.
  12.
