Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Upper shock mounting nuts
     
    Wheel
     
    Lower mounting bolt and nut
     
    Shock absorber/coil spring assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Place the shock absorber/coil spring assembly into a coil spring compressor and compress the spring.
  6.  
  7. Remove the upper shock retaining nut, bushings and washer.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shock absorber from the spring compressor.
  10.  
  11. If the coil spring is being replaced, remove the spring and mounting plate from the compressor, noting the mounting plate-to-spring orientation.
  12.  

To install:

  1. If the coil spring was replaced, align the spring to the mounting plate.
  2.  
  3. Align the centerline of the upper mounting studs with the centerline of the lower shock mount. Install the mounting plate and spring into the compressor and compress the spring.
  4.  
  5. Install the shock absorber into the coil spring and compressor.
  6.  
  7. Install the washers, bushings and upper retaining nut. Tighten the retaining nut to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Relax the tension on the spring compressor and remove the compressor.
  10.  
  11. Install the shock absorber/coil spring assembly to the lower mount. Tighten the lower mounting bolt and nut to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the wheel and lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Install the upper mounting nuts and tighten to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  16.  

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Place a jack or stand under the lower control arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Shock absorber upper nut and isolator
     
    Lower nut/bolt
     
    Shock absorber through the control arm
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the shock through the lower control arm and insert it through the mounting hole in the upper spring pocket.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Shock absorber to the lower control arm. Tighten the nuts/bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
     
    Upper isolator to the shock
     

  4.  
  5. Tighten the upper mounting nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.
