Upper Ball Joints

Removal & Installation



2-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheels.
  6.  
  7. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the brake lines from the upper control arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wheel speed sensor bracket bolt and disconnect the sensor brackets.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper ball joint nut.
  14.  
  15. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle using a separator.
  16.  
  17. Remove the 4 ball joint nuts and bolts from the control arm and discard them.
  18.  
  19. Remove the ball joint from the arm.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Ball joint in the upper control arm
     
    New ball joint retaining nuts and bolts. Tighten the ball joint retainers to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
     
    Ball joint to steering knuckle. Tighten the new nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
     
    Speed sensor bracket and tighten the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
     
    Brake hose to the control arm
     
    Remove the lower control arm jack
     
    Tire and wheel assembly

  3. Check and adjust the front end alignment, as necessary.
  4.  

4-Wheel Drive
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheels.
  6.  
  7. Support the lower control arm with a suitable jack.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the brake lines from the upper control arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wheel speed sensor bracket bolt and disconnect the sensor brackets.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper ball joint nut.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the upper control arm from the ball stud by removing the retaining nuts.
  16.  
  17. Remove and discard the upper ball joint retaining nut.
  18.  
  19. Separate the ball joint from the knuckle using a separator.
  20.  
  21. Remove the ball joint from the arm.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Ball joint in the steering knuckle
     
    Ball joint retaining nut and tighten the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
     
    Upper control arm to the ball stud and tighten the nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
     
    Wheel speed sensor bracket bolt and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. ( 20 Nm).
     
    Brake line to the upper control arm
     
    Front tires
     

  2.  
  3. Check and adjust the front end alignment, as necessary.
