CV-Joints



Inspection

Inspect boots for tears, cracks, splitting and excessive grease deposits. Replace boots as necessary.

Overhaul
Inner Joint
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Halfshaft and place it in a vise
     
    Large and small boot clamp, cut and discard
     
    Ball retaining ring using a screwdriver or equivalent
     
    Tri-pot housing and bushing from the shaft
     

  4.  
  5. Using Snapring Pliers tool J-8059, spread the small retaining ring located in the cage and inner race assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cage and inner race assembly from the halfshaft
  8.  
  9. Remove the balls from the cage.
  10.  
  11. Remove the inner race from the cage.
  12.  
  13. Remove the seal and discard.
  14.  
  15. Thoroughly clean and inspect all parts.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install a new small retaining clamp onto the neck of the seal.
  2.  
  3. Slide the inner seal with the retaining clamp to the proper position on the halfshaft.
  4.  
  5. Secure the small retaining clamp retaining clamp J-35910, breaker bar and torque wrench. Tighten the clamp to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Place the inner race with the retaining ring side up into the cage.
  8.  
  9. Place the six balls in the cage windows.
  10.  
  11. Slide the cage and inner race assembly, small diameter first, onto the halfshaft.
  12.  
  13. Using Snapring pliers J-8059, install the small retaining ring into the groove of the halfshaft.
  14.  
  15. Install convolute retainer 7848076 over the boot engaging 4 boot convolutions.

  16.  
  17. Pack the joint assembly with the kit-supplied grease.
  18.  
  19. Install a new large retaining clamp on the seal.
  20.  
  21. Slide the tri-pot joint housing over the cage and race assembly.
  22.  
  23. Insert the ball retaining ring into the groove at the top of the joint housing.
  24.  
  25. Install the seal onto the joint housing.
  26.  
  27. Ensure the boots are placed at the proper dimensions as shown.

  29. Secure the large retaining clamp to the inner seal with seal retaining clamp J-35910, breaker bar and torque wrench. Tighten the clamp to 130 ft. lbs. (176 Nm).

  31. Remove the convolute retainer tool.
  32.  

Outer Joint
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    NOTE
    When replacing the outer CV-joint, you must replace the inner CV-joint.

  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Halfshaft and position it in a vise
     
    Inner CV-joint
     
    Large CV-joint boot clamp and discard it
     
    Small CV-joint boot clamp and discard it
     

  4.  
  5. Slide the outer seal away from the CV-joint, remove from the halfshaft and discard.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the CV-joint from the halfshaft or you must replace the entire halfshaft assembly.

  6.  
  7. Clean the old grease from the CV-joint and allow to dry.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Pack the CV-joint assembly with the kit supplied grease.
  2.  
  3. Place new retaining clamps onto the new outer seal.
  4.  
  5. Position the small end of the outer seal into the CV-joint outer seal groove on the halfshaft.
  6.  
  7. Secure the small to the outer seal with seal retaining clamp J-35910, breaker bar and torque wrench. Tighten the clamp to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Slide the large end of the outer seal with large retaining ring in place over the outside edge of the CV-joint. Position the lip of the outer seal into the groove on the CV-joint.
  10.  
  11. Remove any excess air from the outer seal.
  12.  
  13. Secure the large retaining clamp to the outer seal with seal retaining clamp J-35910, breaker bar and torque wrench. Tighten the clamp to 130 ft. lbs. (176 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Check the clamp gap dimension; if it is not 0.085 in. (2.15mm), continue tightening the clamp until it is.
  16.  
  17. Install or connect the following:

    Inner CV-joint
     
    Halfshaft
     
    Front wheel
     

  18.  

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Unlock the steering column so the steering linkage is free to move.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheel
     
    Halfshaft nut and washer
     
    Steering knuckle assembly
     

  6.  
  7. Place a drift against the tripot housing and hammer the drift to release the shaft.
  8.  
  9. Remove the halfshaft from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the halfshaft. A snap or pop should be heard and felt when the shaft properly seats in the differential housing.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering knuckle assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install a new halfshaft nut and tighten the nut to 191 ft. lbs. (260 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the front wheel.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.
