Brake Shoes

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel and tire assembly
     
    Brake drum
     
    Adjuster assembly
     
    Retractor spring from secondary shoe
     
    Secondary shoe
     
    Retractor spring from primary shoe
     
    Primary shoe
     
    Return spring
     
    Depress lock tab on parking brake cable
     
    Hold lock tab and push parking brake cable forward
     
    Parking brake cable from lever
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the contact points on the backing plate with high temperature silicone grease.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Parking brake cable in the lever
     
    Primary shoe
     
    Retractor spring on primary shoe
     
    Secondary shoe
     
    Retractor spring on secondary shoe
     
    Adjuster assembly
     

  4.  
  5. Adjust the brake shoes so there is 0.030 inch (0.76 mm) clearance between the lining and the drum.
  6.  
  7. Install the brake drum.
  8.  
  9. Adjust the parking brake cable as necessary.
  10.  
  11. Install the wheel and tire assemblies.
  12.  
  13. Refill the master cylinder and pump pedal to attain full brake pedal before Road-testing the vehicle.
