Transaxle Removal & Installation

31TH Transaxle



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Attach a support fixture to the engine lifting eyes.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Dipstick tube and plug the opening
     
    Torque converter clutch harness connector
     
    Kickdown cable
     
    Shift cable
     
    Gear position switch connector
     
    Back-up lamp switch connector
     
    2 upper transaxle bolts
     
    3 rear mount bracket-to-case bolts
     
    Front wheels
     
    Axle halfshafts
     
    Starter motor
     
    Transaxle fluid cooler lines. Cut the lines flush with the fittings. A service kit will be used upon installation.
     
    Structural collar
     
    Vehicle Speed (VSS) sensor connector
     
    Rear mount shield
     
    Rear mount through bolt
     

  6.  
  7. Support the engine with a screw jack and wood block.

    Cradle plate
     
    Torque converter bolts
     
    Left wheel splash shield
     
    Left upper mount through bolt
     

  8.  
  9. Lower the engine/transaxle assembly and attach a transmission jack to the transaxle.

    Remaining transaxle bolts
     
    Transaxle
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle. Torque the flange bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Raise the transaxle/engine assembly into position using a screw jack and a wood block.

    Left mount bolt. Torque the through bolt to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
     
    Left wheel splash shield
     
    Torque converter bolts and tighten to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm)
     
    Cradle plate
     
    Rear mount bracket-to-transaxle and hand tighten the bolts. Align the rear mount bracket to the mount and install the through bolt. Hand tighten the bolt.
     
    VSS sensor connector
     
    Structural collar
     
    Transaxle fluid cooler lines. Follow the instruction with service kit to install.
     
    Starter motor
     
    Front mount and bracket. Torque the large bracket bolts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm), the small bracket bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) and the through bolt to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
     
    Axle halfshafts
     
    Rear mount bracket vertical bolts to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm)
     
    Back-up lamp switch connector
     
    Gear position switch connector
     
    Shift cable
     
    Kickdown cable
     
    Torque converter clutch harness connector
     
    Dipstick tube
     
    Tighten the rear mount bract horizontal bolt to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm)
     
    Tighten the rear mount through bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the transaxle with the correct type and amount of fluid
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for proper operation.
  8.

    Battery shield
     
    Coolant recovery bottle
     
    Dipstick tube and plug the opening
     
    Transaxle fluid cooler lines. Cut the lines flush with the fittings. A service kit will be used upon installation.
     
    Input and output shaft sensor connectors
     
    Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) connector
     
    Solenoid/pressure switch connector
     
    Shift cable
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from the bell housing, if equipped
     
    Position the leak detection pump harness and hoses aside
     
    Rear mount bracket-to-case bolts
     
    Upper transaxle bolts
     
    Transaxle pan
     
    Front wheels
     
    Axle halfshafts
     
    Power Transfer Unit (PTO), if equipped
     
    Rear mount bracket-to-case lower bolt
     
    Front mount/bracket assembly
     
    Starter motor
     
    Lateral bending brace
     
    Inspection cover
     
    Torque converter bolts
     

  6.  
  7. Support the engine with a screw jack and wood block.

    Left wheel splash shield
     
    Left upper mount through bolt
     

  8.  
  9. Lower the engine/transaxle assembly and attach a transmission jack to the transaxle.

    Upper mount bracket from the transaxle
     
    Remaining transaxle bolts
     
    Transaxle
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Transaxle. Torque the flange bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
     
    Upper mount assembly and tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm)
     

  2.  
  3. Raise the transaxle/engine assembly into position using a screw jack and a wood block.

    Left upper mount through bolt and tighten to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm)
     
    Left wheel splash shield
     
    Torque converter bolts and tighten to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm)
     
    Inspection cover
     
    Lateral bending brace
     
    Starter motor
     
    Front mount/bracket assembly
     
    Rear mount bracket-to-case lower bolt. Align the assembly, hand tighten the bolt first, then tighten to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm) on the assembly is aligned.
     
    PTO, if equipped
     
    Axle halfshafts
     
    Front wheels
     
    Transaxle pan
     
    Rear mount bracket-to-case vertical bolts to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm)
     
    Upper transaxle bolts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
     
    CKP sensor to the bell housing, if equipped
     
    Shift cable
     
    Attach the leak detection pump harness and hoses
     
    Solenoid/pressure switch connector
     
    TRS connector
     
    Input and output shaft sensor connectors
     
    Transaxle fluid cooler lines. Attach using the service kit supplied following the kit instructions.
     
    Dipstick tube
     
    Coolant recovery bottle
     
    Battery shield
     
    Battery cables

  5. Fill the transaxle with the correct type and amount of fluid

  7. Start the engine and check for proper operation.

  5. Fill the transaxle with the correct type and amount of fluid

  7. Start the engine and check for proper operation.
