CV-Joints



Overhaul
Inner Joint
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Axle halfshaft from the vehicle
     
    Inner tri-pot joint boot clamps
     
    Tri-pot joint housing
     
    Snapring
     
    Tri-pot joint
     

  4.  

To install:


NOTE
Use new snaprings, clips, and boot clamps for assembly.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Tri-pot joint
     
    Snapring
     
    Tri-pot joint housing
     

  2.  
  3. Fill the tri-pot joint housing and boot with grease and tighten the boot clamps.
  4.  
  5. Install the axle halfshaft.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable
  8.  

Outer Joint

The outer CV-joint and boot are serviced with the axle halfshaft as an assembly.

Removal & Installation



Front
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Split pin
     
    Nut lock
     
    Spring washer
     
    Hub nut
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Outer tie rod end
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness, if equipped
     
    Lower ball joint
     

  4.  
  5. Separate the outer CV-joint stub shaft from the steering knuckle.
  6.  
  7. Pry the inner tri-pot joint out of the transaxle and remove the axle halfshaft.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the axle halfshaft so that the inner joint circlip seats in the transaxle side gear.
  2.  
  3. Guide the outer CV-joint stub shaft through the steering knuckle hub.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Lower ball joint. Torque the nut to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm) plus a 90 degree turn.
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness, if equipped
     
    Outer tie rod end. Torque the nut to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
     
    Brake caliper and rotor. Torque the caliper bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
     
    Hub nut. Torque the nut to 180 ft. lbs. (245 Nm).
     
    Spring washer
     
    Nut lock
     
    Split pin
     
    Front wheel
     

  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
  8.  

Rear
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Cotter pin, nut lock and washer
     
    Half shaft nut and washer
     
    Rear halfshafts from the output flanges
     
    Axle halfshaft
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Guide the outer CV-joint stub shaft through the rear wheel hub.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Inner joint to the differential. Torque the flange bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
     
    Half shaft nut and washer and tighten the nut to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm)
     
    Waver washer, nut lock and new cotter pin
     
    Rear wheel
