Removal & Installation

NOTE
The ignition coil is located at the back of the intake manifold.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. If necessary, remove the windshield wiper/motor module assembly. `

  8.
  9. Remove the coil mounting bracket bolts, then remove the coil and mounting bracket assembly from the vehicle.
  10.
  11. The ignition coil can be separated from the mounting bracket.
  12.

To install:

  1. If separated, loosely mount the ignition coil to the mounting bracket.
  2.
  3. Loosely install the coil and mounting bracket assembly to the intake manifold. Tighten the coil mounting bracket-to-intake manifold bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm) and the ignition coil-to-mounting bracket fasteners to 96 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.
  5. Connect the ignition wire to the coil.
  6.
  7. Engage the wiring harness connector to the ignition coil.
  8.
  9. If removed, install the windshield wiper/motor module assembly.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.

Testing

  1. Remove the coil wire from the distributor cap. Using non-conductive ignition pliers, hold the end of the wire about 1 / 4 in. (6mm) away from a good engine ground point.
  2.
  3. Have a helper crank the engine. Check for a spark between the coil wire end and the ground point.
  4.
  5. If there is a spark, it must be constant and bright blue in color.
  6.
  7. Continue to crank the engine. Slowly move the wire away from the ground point. If arching at the coil tower occurs, replace the coil.
  8.
  9. If the spark is good and no arcing at the coil tower occurs, the ignition system is producing the necessary high secondary voltage.
  10.
  11. Check to make sure that the voltage is getting to the spark plugs. Inspect the distributor cap, rotor, spark plug wires and spark plugs.
  12.
  13. If all of the components check okay, the ignition system is probably not the reason why the engine does not start.
  14.
  15. Check the fuel system and engine mechanical items, such as the timing belt.
