Removal & Installation
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Label and disconnect the spark plug wires from each of the coil pack towers.
- Disengage the electrical connector from the ignition coil pack.
- Remove the coil pack mounting fasteners.
- Remove the coil pack from the vehicle. If equipped, remove the coil pack from the mounting bracket.
- Place the coil pack into position on top of the engine valve cover, or mounting bracket, if equipped.
- Install and tighten the coil pack mounting fasteners to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
- Plug in the electrical connector to the ignition coil pack.
- Connect each spark plug wire to each corresponding coil pack tower. The coil pack towers are numbered with the correct cylinder identification. Be sure that the spark plug wires snap firmly onto each coil tower.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
On the 2.4L engine, coil one fires cylinders 1 and 4, coil two fires cylinders 2 and 3. On 3.3L and 3.8L engines, coil one fires cylinders 1 and 4, coil two fires cylinders 2 and 5, coil three fires cylinders 3 and 6. Each coil tower is labeled with the number of the corresponding cylinder.
Primary Coil Resistance Test
- Unplug the electrical connector from the ignition coil pack.
- Measure the primary resistance of each coil. At the coil, connect an ohmmeter between the B+ pin and the pin corresponding to the cylinders in question.
- The resistance on the primary side of each coil should be 0.45-0.65 ohms at 70°-80°F (21°-27°C).
A coil that has not been allowed to cool off, would result in an inaccurate measurement. Replace the coil if not within specifications.
- Disconnect the spark plug wires from the secondary towers of the ignition coil.
Use an ohmmeter to measure the secondary resistance of the coil between the towers of each individual coil pack.
- The secondary resistance should be 10,900-14,700 ohms. If resistance is not within specifications, the coil must be replaced.
