  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

Rear wheels and the brake drums

  6.
  7. Be sure the parking brake pedal is in the released position. Create slack in the rear parking brake cables by grasping an exposed section of the front parking brake cable, pulling it down and rearward. Maintain the slack in the brake cable by clamping a pair of locking pliers onto the parking brake cable just rearward of the rear body outrigger bracket.

  8.

To install:

  1. Thoroughly clean and dry the backing plate. To prepare the backing plate, lubricate the 8 brake shoe contact areas and brake shoe anchor, using suitable grease.
  2.
  3. Install or connect the following:

Leading brake shoe into position on the brake shoe support plate. Secure the leading brake shoe by installing the brake shoe hold-down clip and pin.

Parking brake actuating strut onto the leading brake shoe and then install the parking brake actuating lever onto the strut

  4.
  5. Lubricate the shaft threads of the automatic adjuster screw assembly with anti-seize lubricant.

  6.
  7. Once the brake shoes and all other brake system components are fully and correctly installed, remove the locking pliers from the front parking brake cable. This will remove the slack and correctly adjust the parking brake cables.
  8.
  9. Make sure there is no grease on the brake shoe linings, then install the brake drums.
  10.
  11. Adjust the rear brakes, then lower the vehicle and check the brakes for proper operation.
  12.
  13. Install the wheels.
  14.
  15. Road-test the vehicle. The automatic adjuster will continue to adjust the brake shoes during the road-test.
  16.

Adjustment

  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2.
  3. Remove rubber plug from rear brake adjusting hole in the rear brake support plate.
  4.
  5. Insert a thin screwdriver through the adjusting hole in the support plate and against the star wheel of the adjusting screw. Move handle of the tool downward, rotating the star wheel until a slight drag is felt when tire and wheel assembly is rotated.
  6.
  7. Insert a second thin screwdriver or piece of welding rod into brake adjusting hole and push the adjusting lever out of engagement with the star wheel. Care should be taken so as not to bend adjusting lever or distort lever spring.
  8.
  9. While holding the adjusting lever out of engagement, back off the star wheel just enough to ensure a free wheel with no brake shoe drag.
  10.
  11. Repeat the above adjustment at the other rear wheel.
  12.
  13. Install the adjusting hole rubber plugs back in the rear brake support plates.
